GEORGETOWN, Texas - The fifth-seeded Trinity
University Tigers beat No. 4 Randolph-Macon 25-23, 25-13, 22-25,
25-17 Thursday in the opening of the NCAA Division III South Region
Volleyball Tournament at Southwestern University. The win was the
700th of Tiger head coach Julie Jenkins'
illustrious career.
Coach Jenkins, in her 25th year at the Tigers' helm, stands at
700-312, including one year at Division I Virginia Commonwealth
University. She has guided Trinity to a mark of 671-291, and 18
consecutive berths in the NCAA playoffs.
Trinity (28-11) takes on top seed and defending national champion
Emory University (34-4) at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the NCAA Regional
Semifinals at the Robertson Center. The winner will advance to
Saturday's Regional Championship, the round of 16, at 7 p.m. The
championship match will determine which team moves on to the NCAA
Quarterfinals Nov. 19 at University Heights, Ohio. The NCAA
Semifinals and Championship are slated for Nov. 20-21, also at
University Heights.
Senior middle blocker Aly Hazelwooded the team with 13 kills and
seven blocks. Hazelwood, elected to the All-South Region Team, hit
.440 (13 kills, 2 errors, 25 total attacks) in the match. She also
had three service aces.
Ginger Haley, a senior middle blocker, hit .304 (9 kills, 2 errors,
23 total attacks), and made four blocks. Haley was selected for the
All-South Region Honorable Mention Team.
Junior setter Caiti Troyer amassed 38 assists and 13 digs. Alexis
Edwards, a junior libero, led the Tigers with 21 digs. Emily
Hilliard, a junior defensive specialist from, fired in five aces
and accounted for 13 digs. Junior right-side player Tayler Malloy,
added five blocks. Amy Mittelstaedt, a senior outside hitter,
chalked up 11 digs and three blocks.
