SCAC Athletes open up competition at NCAA Track and Field Championships

BEREA, Ohio - DePauw seniors Lauren Reich and Nicole Stein and Rhodes junior Molly Buck advanced to Saturday's finals on the first day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

Reich was second in her heat of the 1,500-meter run to Marie Borner of Bethel (Minn.) and was second overall in the event. She advanced to Saturday's 1:20 p.m. final.

Stein won her heat of the 400-meter hurdles in 62.05 seconds which was the fifth-fastest time in the event. She'll compete in Saturday's finals at 3:15 p.m.

Buck who competed in the 400-meter hurdles qualified for Saturday's final finishing second in her heat in a time of 61.33, good enough for the fourth-fastest time in the event.

Buck along with Megan Lee, Samantha Specht and Julia Goss of Rhodes competed in the 4x400-meter relay posting a time of 3:51.65, finishing 10th and less than two second shy of quilifying for the finals.

Courtney Lauer of DePauw began competition in the heptathlon on the first day totaling 2,662 points and is in 12th place after four of the seven heptathlon events. She was seventh in the shot put, ninth in the high jump, 11th in the 200 meters and 16th in the 100 hurdles. Heptathlon competition wraps up on Friday.

In field events, Sophomore Emily Niehaus of Centre took 10th place in the hammer throw. Niehaus had a throw of 168'0" in the first round of the hammer throw event. There were two flights with nine participants in each round. Niehaus came up just shy of qualifying for the final round, as the top nine throws advanced to the final round.

On the men's side, sophomore Jackson Brainerd of Colorado College just missed advancing to the finals of the 1500-meters with less than a half second seperating him from the finals.

Brainerd's 3:53.84 clocking in Thursday's opening round was good for seventh place in his heat and 13th overall in a field of 15 student athletes who qualified for nationals in the 1,500 meters.

The top four in each heat, plus the runners with the next four fastest times for a total of 12 altogether, move on to battle for an NCAA title on Saturday. The final qualifier got in with a 3:53.43, just .41 seconds faster than Brainerd.

Still to compete on Friday for Trinity in the men's 800-meter junior Zach Brush. On the women's side, Molly Buck of Rhodes will compete in the 100-meter hurdles.
