SUWANEE, Ga. - The seeds are set for the 2010 SCAC Basketball Tournament after the final weekend of regular season play. Defending league champion Centre College earned the No. 1 seed in the East, while Austin College earned its first No. 1 seed out of the West.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College split its final two regular season games over the weekend, topping Hendrix 83-69 before falling 60-56 to Millsaps. The ‘Roos are now 19-6 overall, matching the best record in school history with the SCAC Tournament still to come. Kola Alade hit 10-of-15 shots to finish with 28 points against Hendrix as the ’Roos outscored the Warriors 47-31 in the second half after heading into halftime trailing by two. Josh Saunders added 12 points and Chris Sturtevant had nine points, nine boards and three blocked shots. Against the Majors, Austin College led at halftime but fell by four despite 18 points from Alade, who was the only player for AC to reach double figures. Scott Straley and Taylor Beatty each added nine points in the loss. The ’Roos now look ahead to the SCAC Tourney after clinching their first ever SCAC West title, facing Rhodes in the first round on Friday.

Birmingham-Southern dropped their final two road games of the season at Centre and DePauw last weekend. Friday, the Panthers had trouble getting started scoring just 17 points in the first half in their 66-57 loss to Centre. Then on Sunday, it was the second half that didn’t cooperate, as the Panthers dropped their final game of the season 92-82 at DePauw. They finish the regular season 20-5 overall and 11-5 in conference play, tied with Centre and DePauw for the East Division crown.

Centre picked up two big home wins to finish the regular season on a five-game winning streak. The Colonels took care of Birmingham-Southern Friday 66-57 and then defeated Rhodes 76-61 on Senior Day Sunday. The two wins gives Centre a 15-8 overall record and 11-5 mark in the SCAC heading into the conference tournament. In the two games combined, the Colonels shot 51.0% (50-98) from the floor and only turned the ball over 12 total times in the two contests, including only five against the Lynx. Centre will enter the tournament as the #1 seed in the East and will play Millsaps in a first round game.

Nick Rose scored 33 points, but Colorado College saw its season come to an end with an 88-78 loss at Hendrix on Sunday. Despite fouling out with 59 seconds remaining, Rose surpassed the 30-point mark for the sixth time this season and completed his third double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds. The Tigers shot only .333 from the floor in the second half, making just three of 12 field-goal attempts from inside the arc. CC made seven of 18 three-point attempts during the final 20 minutes to stay within striking distance. Jeremiah Waters added 15 points and six rebounds for CC. The Tigers missed out on an opportunity to lock up a berth in the SCAC Tournament with a 54-51 loss at Millsaps. Rose paced the Tigers with 22 points, while Ohlsen had a game-high 12 rebounds and nine points. CC’s total of 12 victories are the most since the 2003-04 team posted a 15-10 record and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, and the seven victories are the most in conference play since joining the SCAC for the 2007-08 season.

DePauw improved to 18-7 overall and finished tied for the top spot in the SCAC Eastern Division at 11-5 after wins over Rhodes (53-36) and Birmingham-Southern (92-82). Tony James led the Tigers in the win over Rhodes with 16 points and three assists, while David Gray grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Against Birmingham-Southern, the Tigers made all 16 free throw attempts in the final two minutes to seal the win. James led five double-figure scorers with 17 and hit all 13 free throw attempts, while Tom Callen added 14. Tommy Weakley chipped in 12 on four three-pointers, while Steve Lemasters added 11 and Gray finished with 10. Gray and Drew Wills each hauled down six rebounds and James dished out five assists. The Tigers shot 62.2 percent for the game including 68.2 percent in the second half. The games were the final home contests for Matt Bennett, Callen, Gray, and James who have posted a 78-27 overall record, a 44-14 SCAC mark and a 42-3 home record.

Hendrix wrapped up its regular season with a two-game split, including a senior day victory over Colorado College on Sunday. The Warriors suffered a 83-69 loss to Austin College on Friday night and finished the 2009-10 season at 7-16 overall and 4-12 in SCAC play. Senior guard Kola Alade scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lift the No. 1 West Roos on Friday evening at Grove Gymnasium. Warriors’ senior guard Cal Rose matched his season-high of 22 points in the contest. Hendrix did it all on Sunday with fast break dunks, back-to-back 3-pointers and aggressive defense (12 steals) to send the seniors out on top with an 88-78 victory over Colorado. Senior guard Cal Rose knocked down four treys on his way to a team-high 23 points. Senior forward Jesse Ford highlighted the game on a one-handed slam with 40 seconds left in regulation. Senior point guard Janson Hightower dished out a game-best five assists and joined Ford with three thefts. Senior point guard Sean McQueen also added a couple of assists and one steal.

Millsaps needed a pair of wins and some help to prolong its season and did so by sweeping the final weekend of SCAC play at The Hangar Dome to clinch a spot in next weekend’s conference tournament held at Millsaps College. Senior guard Blake Martinez tied a career-high 29 points to lead the Majors to a 64-51 victory over Colorado College Friday night. Cameron Varnado finished with 13 points and Chris Ingle added six to go with Martinez's 29 on 12-of-18 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from behind the arc. Martinez caught fire on Sunday afternoon scoring 25 of his 27 points in the second half and Millsaps got a 60-56 come-from-behind win over Austin College, the top team in the SCAC West Division. Millsaps secured its place as the No. 4 seed from the SCAC West Division. The Majors will face Centre College Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at The Hangar Dome in the opening game of the 2010 SCAC Tournament.

Oglethorpe went 2-0 on the week by knocking off Piedmont College (83-69) on Wednesday and taking care of Sewanee (84-71) Saturday night. Oglethorpe enters the SCAC Tournament this week winners of three straight and four of their last five. Against the Lions, the Petrels were lifted by the spirited play of their bench who managed to tally 47 points amongst them in the victory. Andrew Steioff led all Petrels in scoring with 13 points on a near-perfect 6 of 7 shooting performance. Alec Pitts recorded 12 points and E.C. Williams posted 10 points and 5 steals for the Petrels. Oglethorpe shot 52% (33-64) from the field. Versus Sewanee, The Petrels opened up a double-digit lead less than four minutes into the contest and cruised to the victory from there. Oglethorpe celebrated Senior Day and all four of them got into the act on Saturday night. Oglethorpe will compete in the SCAC Championship next Friday-Sunday in Jackson, Miss. The Petrels are the the No. 3 seed in the East and will square off with the No. 2 seed from the West, Trinity at 3:00 p.m. Central on Friday.

Rhodes went 1-2 this weekend. They opened the week with a home victory over Free Will. The Lynx placed four players in double digits with Reid Hamilton leading the way with 20 points. Nathan Ollie scored 15 points and handed out a team high 5 assists. Andrew Galow scored 12 points and dished out 4 assists. Andyshea Saberioon scored 11 points and handed out 4 assists. Rhodes dominated the glass as they out rebounded their opponent 46-28. Galow grabbed a game high and career high 9 rebounds, and Hamilton grabbed 8 as well. Rhodes dropped both of the SCAC matchups this weekend as the lost at DePauw in a low scoring affair, 53-36. Rhodes then dropped a 76-61 decision to Centre. Rhodes was placed three players in double digits, led by Galow’s game high 19 points. Ollie and Hamilton scored 15 and 13 respectively. Kilpatrick led the Lynx with 6 rebounds.

Sewanee closed out its 2009-10 season with an 84-71 loss at Oglethorpe. The host Stormy Petrels led 38-26 at the half. Newcomer Matt Cowan led Sewanee's effort with 22 points, including seven three-pointers in the second half. Garrett Hollingsworth was also in double digits for the Tigers with 14 points and led the team in scoring this year with a 10.2 ppg average. Freshman Tyler Brown led with 5.8 rebounds per game. The Tigers finish the season at 4-21 and 1-15 in the SCAC. Oglethorpe is 15-10 and 9-7.

Southwestern ended the regular season at 16-9 overall and 9-7 in the conference after a home loss to Trinity this week. By dropping their last three games of the season they fall to third place in the West. The Pirates had their second lowest point total of the season in their loss to the Tigers, shooting just 30.4% from the field, 19.2% from long range and 76.9% from the free throw line and putting up 49 points. Even with the long scoreless stretches Southwestern only trailed by single digits, relying on tough defense to keep them in the contest. Southwestern advances to the SCAC tournament in Jackson, Miss. and will face DePauw University, the #2 seed in the East, at 8:00 pm on Friday, February 26th.

Trinity finished 2-0 in the final week of the regular season, including a win over Southwestern that earned Trinity the second seed in the West for the SCAC Tournament. Not only did Trinity’s 58-49 win at Southwestern earn the Tigers a series split for the year, but it also vaulted the team past Southwestern for the West Division’s No. 2 seed. Just two weeks ago, Trinity was battling for a spot in the tournament. The night after defeating Southwestern, Trinity finished off the regular season schedule with a 63-55 win at the University of Dallas. Trinity finishes its regular season with 13-12 record overall, and a 9-7 mark in SCAC play. The Tigers will face Oglethorpe in the opening round of the tournament at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Trinity lost 66-62 at home against Oglethorpe earlier this season.
