DANVILLE, Ky. – For the third consecutive
year, the men’s soccer teams at Austin College and Centre
College will vie with more than just conference standings
implications on the line. When the two squads meet on Friday,
October 2, in Danville, Ky., they will also be playing to benefit
the Susan G. Komen For the Cure.
In the spring of 2007 Mark Hudson, during his fifth season as
assistant soccer coach to Jeb Burch at Centre College, was named
head coach at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. The two good
friends decided to have a friendly wager for a good cause as part
of their annually scheduled conference match-up.
During the summer of 2007, rising Centre senior Robby Crump’s
mother, Sue Hauck, was fighting breast cancer. Sadly, Sue lost her
life to breast cancer as the team reported to preseason in August
of 2007.
Mark Hudson, a native of Danville, Ky., where Centre is located,
shared a similar experience as long-time family friend, Elizabeth
Walter, lost her life to breast cancer in 2007.
Hudson and Burch saw first hand the tragedy of breast cancer, and
decided to join forces with Susan G. Komen For the Cure. Susan G.
Komen For the Cure is the largest grassroots network of breast
cancer survivors and activists working together to save lives,
empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to
find the cures for breast cancer.
The inaugural Komen Game between Austin and Centre took place
October 27, 2007 in Danville. The Kangaroos of Austin raised more
money than the Centre Colonels, with both sides donating $5,700 to
the Komen Foundation in the name of Sue Hauck and Elizabeth Walter.
The two teams met at midfield prior to kick off to combine their
donations for the Komen Foundation.
In the game, before a packed house, the Kangaroos struck first in
the match to go up 1-0. The Colonels answered with two goals of
their own to take a 2-1 lead. With less than five minutes in the
second half, the Kangaroos hit the equalizer to send the match into
overtime.
Senior Colonel Robby Crump, who had yet to score a goal in his
career, hit the golden goal five minutes into the first overtime.
The goal turned out to be Robby’s only career goal.
The Komen Game II took place in 2008 in Sherman, Texas, where the
Colonels raised more
money than the Kangaroos, with both sides again meeting at midfield
prior to kick off to combine their donations, totaling $5,200, for
the Komen Foundation. Again the combined donation was in the name
of Sue Hauck and Elizabeth Walter. The Colonels went on to win the
match, 1-0.
Coach Hudson and Coach Burch will once again look to their teams,
schools, and communities tosee who can raise the most money, to be
donated to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure, in the name of Sue
Hauck and Elizabeth Walter.
