AROUND THE SCAC

Birmingham-Southern earned its first SCAC win this week, defeating Sewanee 8-7 on the road. The Panthers are now 4-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The game went back-and-forth for the full 60 minutes, with neither team able to gain a substantial advantage. Sewanee scored a goal to tie the game at seven with 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. With the game seemingly headed to overtime, Jacob McPherson scored with just 25 seconds remaining to seal the win for BSC. McPherson scored three goals on the night to lead the Panthers. Cameron Overton collected 14 saves in goal for the night. The Panthers return to Panther Stadium tomorrow night for a non-conference match with Whittier College before hosting Hendrix on Sunday afternoon.

Colorado College set school records for goals in a game and largest margin of victory with a 27-0 win over Southwestern in the first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Washburn Field. Hunter Sprole scored the only goal CC would need and the second game winner of his career 1:45 into the game. The Tigers led 9-0 at the end of the first period and 19-0 at halftime. Moses Taylor led Colorado College with five goals and an assist, all in the first half. Sprole needed less than 30 minutes to record four goals and a pair of assists, while Carson Christman scored three times and set up three others. Brendan Haas, Max Pluss and Jackson Nye made three saves while combining for CC’s first shutout since a 22-0 victory over Hendrix on April 27, 2008. Colorado College makes the first of two consecutive trips to Ohio next weekend to face Kenyon College and The College of Wooster on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Hendrix did not play last week. The Warriors are off until Saturday, April 11 when they travel to Birmingham, Ala. to take on the Birmingham-Southern Panthers. Hendrix will look for its first win of the season in an SCAC contest at 1 p.m. The Warriors are 0-8 and 0-1 in the SCAC.

Sewanee went 0-2 this week, including a narrow SCAC loss to Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday. The Panthers came back on the Tigers and finished them off with the game-winner in the last minute of the game. The Tigers then fell 12-6 to Whittier on Saturday. Jack Thomasson is leading Sewanee so far with 14 goals. Newcomer Carson Pfeifer has eight goals so far. Stewart Calder had played 265 minutes in goal so far and has grabbed 73 saves. The Tigers are 1-8 overall and are now 0-1 in the SCAC. They will play at Fontbonne and Mt. St. Joseph this weekend.

Coming off their first win of the season and in the history of the program, Southwestern knew it had a big challenge in front of them as they headed to Colorado College on Saturday to continue SCAC action. Southwestern was unable to score and were out-shot 72-8 in the contest as they fell 27-0. The Pirates now sit at 1-9 on the season and 1-1 in the SCAC. They have an off weekend and will resume conference play on April 16th at Birmingham-Southern.
