SHERMAN, Texas – Austin College head
football coach and Texas high school coaching legend Ronnie Gage
has been selected as part of a five member Class of 2009 to be
inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of
Honor on July 22, the THSCA has announced.
Gage, a two-time Texas 5A State Champion winner at Lewisville High
School, will be inducted at the THSCA convention. Gage served as
the head coach at Lewisville from 1991-2005 and was named the
District 5-5A Coach of the Year three times as well as the District
6-5A Coach of the Year twice.
“I am so pleased to see this recognition for Ronnie,”
said Austin College Vice President for Student Affairs and
Athletics Tim Millerick. “His work as the head football coach
at Austin College has been outstanding.”
Before coaching at Lewisville, Gage earned District 5-4A Coach of
the Year honors at Northwest High School, where he served as the
head coach from 1987-1990. Over the course of his 18 year high
school head coaching career, Gage compiled a record of 137-60-9,
won five District Championships, were three time area finalists,
and twice made it to the regional finals.
Gage served as the president of the THSCA in 2004 and 2005, and was
the regional director in 1999. In that same year he was the
recipient of the Fox Sports Coach Who Makes a Difference Award, and
was twice named the Texas Sportswriters Coach of the Year. In
addition, Gage was a two time Northeast Tarrant County Coach of the
Year, and was the Dallas All-Sports Association Coach of the Year
in 1996 after leading Lewisville to a perfect 15-0 season and a
state title.
Gage, a native of Decatur and a 1976 graduate of the University of
North Texas, came to Austin College in 2006 and in his first three
seasons his teams have led the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference in rushing and finished among the national leaders each
year. After inheriting a team that won just one game the previous
year, Gage has guided the ’Roos to 13 wins in his first three
seasons. In 2008, the team’s 5-5 record was its best since
the 2001 season.
“Ronnie’s efforts with recruiting have brought both
greater quality and quantity to our squad,” said Millerick.
“During his three seasons here he has guided our program to a
higher competitive level.”
