SUWANEE, Ga. - It was opening weekend of SCAC Field Hockey with all five teams in action. Centre picked up two wins beating DePauw 1-0 and Sewanee 3-0. Rhodes traveled to Conway, Ark. and faced Hendrix picking up the win 3-0. This week the SCAC takes a break from conference action setting up for a number of tough non-conference tilts.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Centre recorded two
shutouts on the road this week against SCAC rivals DePauw
University and Sewanee-University of the South. Centre beat DePauw
1-0 on Friday, Sept. 11, in a closely contested match featuring few
legitimate scoring opportunities. Senior Rachel Watkins (Chicago,
Ill.) scored the only goal of the match on a penalty corner assist
from junior Sarah Humphries (Baltimore, Md.). The Colonels played a
solid defensive match limiting DePauw's scoring chances and
controlling play the final 15 minutes of action. On Sunday, Sept.
13, Centre defeated a very talented and strong Sewanee team 3-0.
The first half was fiercely played and ended on a penalty corner
goal by Humphries assisted by freshman Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill,
N.C.). The Colonels and the Tigers battled through the early stages
of the second half until freshman Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Vir.)
scored on a penalty corner - again assisted by Parks - the take a
2-0 lead. Freshman Anna Fuller (Cincinnati, Oh.) Finished the
scoring for the Colonels with an open play goal from the top of the
circle assisted by a nice pass from fellow freshman Sydney White
(Louisville, Ky.). Centre is now 4-0 on the season with two
shutouts and nine different players recording goals.
DePauw moved to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in SCAC
play after splitting their two games. The Tigers lost to Centre by
a 1-0 score on Friday in a game which included just seven shots.
Centre's game-winning goal came early in the second half. The
Tigers then blanked Transylvania on Sunday as Sarah Riffle scored
three and assisted on the other two. Katie Sowar scored one and
added two assists, while Kimberly Trainor added the other goal. The
Tigers outshot the Pioneers, 42-6, in the win and held a 3-0 edge
at the break.
Hendrix opened its SCAC season with a 3-0 loss to
Rhodes College, despite a 10 save effort from junior goalkeeper
Alyssa Havens on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. The Warriors
stand at 1-1 overall after the SCAC season opener and will now look
ahead to their Sept. 18 game at Lindenwood University in St.
Charles, Mo. Rhodes cracked the scoreboard in the 28th minute when
sophomore Libby Jones put the ball past the keeper off junior
Lindsey Gurkovich’s first assist of the game. Sophomore
Chelsea McLeod then scored the second goal of the game on a penalty
stroke in the 50th minute of play. Junior Hillary Relyea connected
with just under three minutes remaining off another assist from
Gurkovich. Junior defender Heather Newell led the Warriors with
three shots, two on-goal. Junior forward Abby Coleman added two
shots on-goal, while sophomore midfielder Lauren Thorburg and first
year forward Kelly Rappe both had a shot on-goal.
Rhodes earned their first shut out of the season
in their SCAC opener at Hendrix this past Saturday with a 3-0 win.
Libby Jones led the team’s offensive efforts with the first
game winning goal of her career with 7 minutes remaining in the
first half. Mid way through the second half Chelsea McLeod added a
second goal for Rhodes on a penalty stroke. The Lynx put the game
away on a goal by Hillary Relyea with just 3 minutes to go. Lindsey
Gurkovich added two assists on the day and generated much of the
attack. Laura Deines had a spectacular defensive save late in the
second period and Valerie Clarke earned the shutout in cage with 5
saves. Rachel Webb and Sara Sanders also put in strong efforts on
the defensive end. The Lynx outshot the Warriors 16-8 while Hendrix
secured 6 penalty corners to Rhodes’ 5. The Lynx will travel
to Louisville this coming weekend to compete against Division
II’s Bellarmine and in region rival Kenyon.
Sewanee topped Transylvania on Saturday 4-1
before falling to SCAC foe Centre 3-0 on Sunday. The last meeting
of the Tigers and the Colonels was in the 2008 SCAC Tournament
Championships, in which Sewanee came out on top 1-0. Cameron
Herndon, Elise Landau, Caroline Carlin and Anne Booke scored for
Sewanee on Friday. Anna Morrow and Emily Detmer split time on goal
this weekend. The Tigers are 1-2 so far and will host Catawba and
Sweet Briar this weekend.
