SUWANEE, Ga. - Only one game was on the schedule the week of April 19-25 as the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers wrapped up their 2010 season with a 16-10 win over non-conference opponent Fontbonne University.
AROUND THE SCAC
Birmingham-Southern wrapped up the 2010 season
this weekend with a 16-10 win over Fontbonne University in St.
Louis. The Panthers finish the season with a 7-8 record and a 3-1
mark in SCAC-play. This improves on 'Southern's last season tally
by one game as the Panther lacrosse program continues to
grow. The second season of lacrosse on the Hilltop saw
victories over well-established programs like Keene State and Mount
St. Joseph as well as conference wins over Sewanee, Southwestern,
and Hendrix. The win over the Griffins on Sunday closed out the
2010 campaign on a three-game winning streak. The Panthers are
looking to improve even further next season as they prepare for
BSC's first shot at an SCAC tournament championship.
Colorado College is reaping the
benefits of its 3-1 record in Ohio by making a climb in the
national rankings and strengthening its case to earn an at-large
berth in the upcoming NCAA tournament. After winning three of four
contests during a four-game tour of Ohio, the Tigers jumped into
the list of teams receiving votes in the latest United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Coaches Poll and
is now No. 37 in LaxPower.com’s computer rankings. The Tigers
posted victories at Kenyon College (12-9) and the College of
Wooster (12-4) the weekend of April 10-11, then lost at No. 11
Denison University (17-9) on April 16 before defeating Wittenberg
University (9-5) on April 18. CC improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 on
the road. Ironically, the Tigers prevailed against the only two
teams (Wooster and Wittenberg) that have beaten Denison this
season. Colorado College concludes its regular-season schedule this
weekend with conference games against Sewanee and Hendrix College,
respectively, in Conway, Ark.
Hendrix suffered a pair of losses this weekend
and remains winless in 2010 with an 0-10 record. The Warriors
took on Fontbonne for a 11-5 loss on Friday night and then dropped
a 12-5 contest to Christopher Newport (Newport News, Va.) on
Saturday night. Hendrix and Fontbonne scored four goals apiece
in the first half, however, the Griffins owned the second half and
shut down the Warriors attack for the win. Fontbonne scored
five unanswered goals to start the second half and out shot Hendrix
28-8 in the final 30 minutes of play. Sophomore midfielder Don
Geders scored the Warriors’ last goal. Hendrix was held
to just one goal in the second half for the second straight game as
Christopher Newport walked away with the victory. Hendrix
junior attacker Clayton Cersonsky and junior midfielder Tim Wojcik
led the team with two goals apiece. Junior attacker Dan Fox
and sophomore attacker Ben Nelson dished out two assists
each. Nelson also scored a goal in the
contest.
Sewanee did not play last week.
Southwestern closed out its season on the road during the week of April 12-18, facing SCAC opponents Birmingham-Southern and Sewanee over the weekend. Both contests were against tough competition as SU fell 20-3 on Friday at BSC and 19-6 at Sewanee. The losses mark the end of the Pirates first season with a 1-11 overall record and 1-3 in the SCAC and they have a great base with which to build from in 2011.
