AROUND THE SCAC
Birmingham-Southern went 2-1 this week with
wins over the College of Mount St. Joseph and Albion
College. Tuesday the Panthers traveled up to Cincinnati to
take on the Mount, winning 8-7. The Panthers got two goals in
each frame to outlast the Cougars for their second win of the
season. Next followed two neutral site games, the first with
Washington & Jefferson College in Pa. on Thursday where the
Panthers fell 12-10 before winning a big 21-6 decision over Albion
College in Nashville on Sunday. The Panthers are now 3-6 on
the season heading into their conference-opener with Colorado
College on Saturday afternoon at Panther Stadium.
Moses Taylor struck for three goals and assisted on five other
scores to lead Colorado College
to a 13-3 victory over Fontbonne on Saturday. Taylor had a hand in
six scores during the third period when the Tigers exploded for
eight consecutive goals to break open a tight game. He notched what
proved to be the game-winning tally 4:23 into the second half after
taking a feed from Carson Christman. Christman added two more goals
just 21 seconds apart as the Tigers doubled their offensive output
in a span of 54 seconds. Later in the period, CC needed just 1:39
to add four more goals and build an 11-1 lead after Christman
recorded his third score with 2:34 remaining in the third period.
Brendan Haas stopped seven of 10 shots on goal while improving to
3-1 in goal. CC finished with a 51-19 advantage in shots, won 14 of
19 face-offs and had a 32-20 edge in ground balls. Colorado College
plays its first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game
on Saturday when the Tigers travel Birmingham-Southern College.
Hendrix went 0-3 last week and finished its Spring Break road trip with an 0-7 overall record. The Warriors suffered a 14-6 loss to Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday, a 27-7 loss to Saint Vincent on Thursday and a 6-4 defeat to Oberlin on Saturday. Hendrix travels to Georgetown, Texas this coming weekend in search for its first victory in program history when the Warriors face Western Connecticut State on Saturday and then SCAC foe Southwestern on Sunday. W&J. first year attacker Joseph Eck outscored Hendrix 5-2 in the first half to help lead the Presidents. Saint Vincent sophomore attacker Will DeLanoy netted a game-high six goals and sophomore midfielder Kevin Vawter added four scores to lead the Bearcats to a win victory over Hendrix on Thursday afternoon at the SVC Turf. Hendrix suffered its second loss in as many days despite a two goal performance from sophomore midfielder Alex Wilkinson. The Warriors suffered their seventh loss of the year after playing four games in six days on the road to Oberlin in their final game of the trip on Saturday afternoon.
Sewanee dropped a 15-3 decision to Hamilton College on Wednesday. The game was played at Duke University. The Tigers fell behind 4-1 after the first quarter and found themselves trailing 9-2 at the half. Hamilton put the game out of reach by scoring four goals in the fourth quarter for the eventual win. With the loss Sewanee falls to 0-6 and will host Oberlin on the Mountain on March 27 before opening SCAC league play against Birmingham-Southern on March 31.
Southwestern continues to search for their first win of the season and just narrowly missed out on that opportunity in Michigan over spring break. Tuesday the Pirates faced-off against Albion College. SU had a slow start to the contest but rallied in the second half, scoring nine goals but ran out of time as they fell 15-11. After the tough defeat the Pirates looked to rebound against a well established Adrian program but were overpowered as they lost 25-2 on Thursday. Edward Williams and Jamie Long both had three goals on the week while Long led in points with four assists while Williams recorded one. Donnie Murray and Chris O'Quain spit time in the goal and tallied 23 saves. Southwestern returns home for two games this coming weekend as they host Western Connecticut State on Friday and open up SCAC action against Hendrix on Sunday.
