SUWANEE, Ga. - As final exams and the holidays approach, only five of the SCAC's 12 men's basketball teams were in action the week of Dec. 6-13. The SCAC posted a 4-2 non-conference record highlighted by Oglethorpe's 97-93 double-overtime win over cross town rival Emory University.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College did
not play last week. The Kangaroos (6-1 overall, 2-0 SCAC) return to
the court on December 18 when they host East Texas Baptist. The
‘Roos will then take a week and a half off during the
Christmas holiday and will travel Longview, Texas to square off
against LeTourneau. Austin College beat LeTourneau in Sherman on
Nov. 17 by a 72-63 margin.
Birmingham-Southern played just one game this week
due to exams and remained undefeated on the season at 7-0. They
traveled to Montgomery to take on cross-state rival Huntingdon
College, beating the Hawks 89-76. The Panthers used a big first
half to gain the advantage over the Hawks. They took an eleven
point lead, 50-39 into the halftime break. Blaise White led the
Panthers with 18 points on the day. Jasen Jonus added 14 while
Roger Williams and Aaron Parr had 10 apiece to round out those in
double figures for BSC. The Panthers have one game left before the
break and will host Rust College this Friday at 6:00 p.m.
Centre did not play last week. The Colonels (2-4
overall, 1-1 SCAC) return to the court on December 17 when they
host Asbury. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Colonels will
then be off until Dec. 28 and 30 when they host the Papa
John’s/Country Inn Hearth Tournament. Centre opens the
tournament with a game against Emory & Henry (Dec. 28) then
closes with LaGrange (Ga.) on Dec. 30. Centre has not faced Emory
& Henry since Dec. 29, 2005. The Colonels won a 90-76 contest.
That meeting was also played in the Papa John’s/Country
Hearth Inn Tournament. The last time the Colonels faced LaGrange
(Ga.) was Nov. 17, 2007 in which Centre earned a 76-59 win at the
LaGrange Tournament.
Colorado College takes a 5-1 record and a
three-game winning streak into Tuesday night’s game at
Division II Regis University. The Tigers are 1-0 against Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference opponents after defeating cross-town
rival CU-Colorado Springs, 78-72, in the season opener. The last
time CC started 5-1 was 1995-96 when the Tigers finished the season
with a 14-11 record. Junior forward Brady Ohlsen now ranks No. 36
on CC’s career scoring list with 672 points and is tied for
No. 22 with 390 career rebounds. Colorado College plays at Martin
Luther College and Macalester College this Saturday and Monday in
its final games before the New Year.
DePauw is 6-2 after splitting their two games last
week. DePauw topped Purdue North Central by a 92-70 score and lost
at Wabash 72-50. The Tigers jumped out to an 18-0 lead in the
opening 4:08 against Purdue North Central and held a 52-23 halftime
lead. Sean Haseley notched a career high with 19 points and hit
5-of-6 from three-point range, while Steve Lemasters added 17 and
Ryan Russell finished with 10. Ryan Sever finished with a
career-high 11 rebounds as DePauw held a 44-29 advantage on the
boards. Matt Bennett dished out five of the Tigers' 24 assists.
Host Wabash never trailed on the way to earning a season split with
DePauw. Tom Callen led the Tigers with 14, while Lemasters followed
with 13 and Haseley added 10.
Hendrix did not play last week. The Warriors (2-3
overall, 0-2 SCAC) return to the court on Dec. 17 when they host
SCAC rival Millsaps College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Hendrix swept the regular season series with Millsaps last year by
scores of 73-61 and 88-81. Hendrix’s last loss to Millsaps
was March 1, 2008, a 73-68 loss in the SCAC Tournament semifinals.
The road trip then continues Dec. 19-20 as the Hendrix travels to
St. Louis, Mo. For the Webster University Classic. The Warriors
will square off against Coe (Dec. 19) and Cornell College (Dec.
20).
Millsaps did not play
last week. The Majors (1-5 overall, 0-2 SCAC) return to the court
on Dec. 15 when they travel to Rust (7 p.m.) and then Dec.17 when
they travel to SCAC rival Hendrix College. Tip-off is scheduled for
5 p.m. in Conway, Ark. Hendrix swept the regular season series with
Millsaps last year by scores of 73-61 and 88-81. Millsaps’
last win over Hendrix was March 1, 2008, a 73-68 win in the SCAC
Tournament semifinals. The Majors last played Rust Nov. 30, 2008 at
the Millsaps Turkey Shoot-Out and came away with a 92-79 win.
Oglethorpe defeated Emory University in Decatur,
Georgia in a double overtime thriller on Monday evening, 97-93.
Alex Richey scored a lay-up to give the Petrels a 94-93 lead late
in the second overtime and then converted two free throws following
a missed Emory field goal to seal the exciting victory. The game
featured 18 lead changes and 15 ties. The Petrels shot a
scintillating 60% from the field in the second half and 54% overall
for the game. In a box score anomaly, Oglethorpe scored 97 points
yet made only one three-pointer. Alex Richey led the way for
Oglethorpe with a monster game that included 34 points, 7 rebounds,
3 assists and 2 steals. Todd Ward added 18 points, 15 rebounds and
3 blocked shots while Wade Weldon chipped in 17 points on 7 of 10
shooting from the field. Freshman Alex Pitts tallied 16 points on
the night to round out the Petrels in double figures. With the win,
Oglethorpe stands at 4-3 overall. The team will have a brief hiatus
for exams before returning to Pinholster Court to face Hanover at
7:30 p.m. on December 18.
Rhodes defeated Freewill Baptist by a score of
70-43 in its only game of the week. Rhodes will have one more game
in 2009 as they travel to Dallas, Texas to take on the University
of Dallas on December 19. In the last meeting between the two
schools, Dallas’s Travis Ekmark scored a game-high 21 points
on 7 of 13 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds as Dallas won a
65-57 contest in Memphis, Tenn. Rhodes was paced by sophomore Kory
Kilpatrick’s 15 points and nine rebounds. Rhodes has lost two
of the last three meetings between the two schools. The Lynx last
beat Dallas on Dec. 20, 2008, 71-58. Coincidentally, that was the
last time the two teams played in Dallas.
Sewanee played at Covenant Tuesday night and after
trailing by one at the half, fell 57-54 to the host Scots. Zack
Mulligan and Garrett Hollingsworth led Sewanee's scoring with 15
and 14 points respectively. Hollingsworth earned a double-double
with a team-leading 11 rebounds, also. Sewanee shot 34% from the
field, while Covenant hit 41% of its field goals. The Scots also
led in rebounds 43-36. Sewanee is now 3-4 and 0-1 in the SCAC. The
Tigers will host the Lon Varnell Classic Tournament December 19-20
and will host Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern in SCAC play January 1
and 3.
Southwestern did not play last week. The Pirates
(5-2 overall, 1-0 SCAC) return to the court on Dec. 19 when they
host Concordia (Texas) at 4 p.m. Southwestern will also host
Schreiner on Dec. 20 at 4 p.m. The Pirates beat Schreiner 58-41 on
Nov. 22, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas in the most recent meeting
between the two schools.
Trinity did not play last week. The Tigers (1-4
overall, 0-1 SCAC) return to the court on Dec. 19 when they travel
to Georgetown, Texas for the Southwestern University/Trinity
University Classic. Trinity will take on Schreiner at 2 p.m. then
will square off against Concordia (Texas) at 2 p.m. on Dec. 20. The
Tigers picked up their lone win of 2009-10 against Schreiner back
on Nov. 21. Trinity was led by Luke Caldarera’s 15 point, 10
rebound double-double as the Tigers won 61-52. The Tigers also got
a game-high 19 points from Michael Tobolowsky. Trinity will matchup
with Concordia (Texas) for the first time since the 2000-01 season,
which was a 61-48 home win for the Tigers.
