Sewanee gets late goal to defeat Hendrix 1-0 in SCAC Field Hockey tourney opener

CONWAY, Ark. - Sewanee-The University of the South faced host Hendrix College in the first round of the 2009 SCAC Championships today and after 67 scoreless minutes, senior Clare Ashburn scored off of a Carly Grimm assist to give the fifth-seeded Tigers a 1-0 victory. Box Score

Sewanee (7-11) will play top-seeded Rhodes College (11-4) at 11 a.m. CT in Saturday's first semifinal match. Viewers can follow along with live stats and live video on the official website of the championships.

Hendrix ends its season with a 3-13 mark.

Hendrix outshot Sewanee 10-6 and also took 10 corners compared to six for the Tigers. In goal, Sewanee's Emily Detmer had seven saves in goal and the shutout. Alyssa Havens had three saves in goal for Hendrix.

Saturday's second semifinal will match-up second-seeded Centre College (12-4) and third-seeded DePauw University (11-7) and is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. CT.
