STERLING, Va. - The 10th annual D3football.com 2009 Preseason All-American team was announced this morning, with Millsaps College senior OG John Shivers becoming the first Major in school history to be named to the First Team.
"I'm honored to receive this recognition," Shivers said. "It's rewarding to receive individual accolades, but when the season starts, I just want to help us win football games. I've got great teammates, and this wouldn't be possible without their help."
A native of Somerville, Ala., Shivers gained his third Preseason All-American accolade this summer, being named to both Lindy's Magazine and Consensus Draft Services' first teams. He is also the lone selection from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Standout LB Matt O'Bryant is the only other Major to ever be named to the D3football.com Preseason All-American team, gaining second team accolades in 2002 and 2003, where he would eventually be named to the All-American team at seasons end.
Millsaps has had five D3football.com All-Americans in its football history, including Chris Jackson (1st, 2006), O'Bryant (2nd, 2003; HM 2002), Juan Joseph (3rd, 2008) and Shivers (3rd, 2008).
