SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Trinity Tigers women’s soccer team, ranked No. 3 in the nation, clinched its 14th Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship with a 6-1 victory Sunday over Sewanee: The University of the South. Box Score
The Tigers (14-0-0, 7-0-0 SCAC), who are ranked No. 1 in the
latest NCAA West Region rankings, also clinched the automatic bid
to the NCAA Division III playoffs, which begin Nov. 12. The NCAA
Final Four will be held at San Antonio’s Blossom Soccer
Stadium Dec. 4-5.
Tiger sophomore forward Abigail Loar scored two goals in
Sunday’s game, bringing her total to five for the weekend
road games. Loar registered a hat trick – three goals –
in Trinity’s 8-0 shutout of Oglethorpe on Friday in Atlanta.
She became the first Tiger player to score three goals in a game
since a pair of Trinity players did so in 2007. On Sunday, Loar
scored two goals in the 66th and 68 minutes, just two minutes
apart. Loar upped her total to 12 goals for the season.
Senior midfielder Brianna Young scored in her 10th consecutive
game, bringing her season total to a team-best 13 goals. Young
scored in the 27th minute, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead going into
halftime. First-year midfielder Lindsay Euers opened the scoring in
the 15th minute. Junior midfielder Danika Wright scored on a
penalty kick in the 46th minute, and first-year forward Lauren
Henderson produced a goal in the 84th.
Sophomore forward Kelly Watts was once again the story on assists,
as she registered two in Sunday’s game. Watts, who has eight
assists this season, assisted Young and assisted on Loar’s
first goal. Watts tied a school-record with four assists in the
Oglethorpe game on Friday. Also getting an assist on Sunday was
first-year midfielder Katy Lipscomb, who assisted Henderson.
First-year goalkeeper Katie Garrett registered five saves in the
game, bringing her total to 30 this season. Garrett has led the
Tigers to 10 shutouts in 13 games this season, holding a
goals-against average of 0.28 in nearly 1,300 minutes of
action.
The Tigers close out their regular season with two SCAC home games
next weekend, Trinity’s Alumni Weekend. Trinity hosts Rhodes
at 8 p.m. Friday, and Hendrix at 2 p.m. Sunday.
