Men's Lacrosse Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - The Southwestern University Pirates hosted the first-ever collegiate lacrosse game in the state of Texas on March 13 when they hosted Trine. Unfortunately, the Pirates suffered a 19-6 loss.

Meanwhile, the Birmingham-Southern Panthers picked up their first win of the season with a 13-12 overtime win against Keene State. Panther sophomore Jacob McPherson scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals.

AROUND THE SCAC

Birmingham-Southern picked up its first win of the season this past weekend, defeating Keene State, 13-12, in overtime. Sophomore Jacob McPherson scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals. The Panthers travel to face College of Mount Saint Joseph, Tuesday, and then take on Washington and Jefferson College, Thursday, and Albion College, Saturday.

Colorado College returns to action this week after a 17-day break and will play host to McDaniel College and Fontbonne University on Tuesday and Saturday, respectively, at Washburn Field. The games will be CC’s first against Division III opponents this season. The Tigers are 2-0 versus Division II opponents. CC averaged 14 goals per game and allowed an average of 6 during its two games versus NCAA opponents. Following Saturday’s contest, Colorado College plays seven of its final eight games on the road. Eleven Tigers will have their heads shaved on March 19 when they participate in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s annual event to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research. It marks the third consecutive year the men’s lacrosse team has participated in the national event.

Otterbein College first year attackman Alex Dowell scored five goals to lead the Cards to their first win in program history, defeating Hendrix 11-5 on Sunday afternoon at DeSales Stadium.  Otterbein struck just 50 seconds into the game when Dowell scored his first goal and the Cards would take a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. Hendrix sophomore midfielder Don Geders an unassisted goal early in the second quarter to tie the game. First year midfielder Graham Shippy collected back-to-back goals within the next three minutes to put the Cards on top 3-1. Warriors junior attackman Clayton Cersonsky answered with back-to-back goals of his own, the second coming with just eight ticks left on the clock to tie the game 3-3 at halftime. Otterbein scored three unanswered goals to start the second half and Hendrix junior midfielder Tim Wojcik recorded his first of two second half goals to make it 6-4 after 45 minutes of action. Wojcik opened the fourth quarter with his second goal, however, the Cards went on a five goal spree to reach the final mark of 11-5. Each team picked up 46 ground balls, and also notched ten face-off victories apiece. Otterbein first year goalkeeper Adam Hatchard recorded 12 saves, while Hendrix sophomore goalkeeper Keith Clemens stopped 13 shots for the Warriors.  

Sewanee dropped a pair of games this week with losses to Greensboro and Catholic. Jack Thomasson is leading the Tigers so far this year and has nine goals. Stewart Calder is the goalie of record for the Tigers. Sewanee will play Hamilton College at Durham, N.C. on Wednesday and will open SCAC league play March 31 against Birmingham-Southern.

Southwestern held its first ever home game over the weekend, playing host to Trine University of Indiana. After a ceremonial coin toss SU got to work and kept things close through the first quarter, going down just 4-2 at the end of the period. Edward Williams scored the first home goal for the Pirates as Jamie Long assisted on the play. Trine turned up the heat in the second quarter and took control of the game scoring six goals. The Pirates fell 19-6 and drop to 0-6 on the season. Long led with three goals and two assists, posting eight points on the afternoon. Southwestern heads to Michigan for their spring break to face Albion and Adrian on Tuesday and Thursday.
