SUWANEE, Ga. - Highlighted by a home sweep of DeSales (Pa.), the Trinity Tigers posted a 3-1 record on the week, including a split with Millsaps, to improve to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in league play. With three wins in Florida, Sewanee has now won four of its last six games, including three in a row.

Birmingham-Southern stretched its winning streak to 13 games thanks to wins over No. 11 Adrian (10-1) and Berry (13-11) and continued its climb up the national rankings as the Panthers moved up six spots to No. 16 in this week's D3Baseball.com poll.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College improved to 11-8 overall (remained 5-5 SCAC) thanks to a double-header sweep of Wabash (Ind.) and a home win over Bethany (Kan.). With the wins Austin College has now won nine of its past 10 games and three straight. The ‘Roos took the twin bill by scores of 4-3 and 12-4. Pacing the Austin College attack was Sean Muder who went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run and two RBI and two runs scored in the first game with Wabash. In game two, Scooter Merritt went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles, a single and two runs scored. Austin College returns to action on Tuesday March 16 when the ‘Roos host East Texas Baptist before traveling to Georgetown, Texas to square off with SCAC rival Southwestern on Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21.

No. 16 Birmingham-Southern went 2-0 this week at home, defeating No. 11 Adrian College, 10-1, and Berry College, 13-11, to move to 13-1 on the season. The Panthers also moved into the D3baseball.com Top 25 this week, debuting at No. 22 for their first national ranking since moving to Division III. BSC is also undefeated at home (11-0) this season. As a team, the Panthers are out-scoring their opponents 168-58 and out-hitting them 208-120 (.398 to .256). The BSC pitching staff owns a 3.78 ERA with 114 total strikeouts. The Panthers are at home this week, hosting Mid-Continent University, Wednesday, LaGrange College, Thursday, and opening conference play against DePauw, Saturday and Sunday.

Centre went 1-4 on the week. The Colonels fell to Transylvania 9-2 Tuesday and then dropped a doubleheader 8-7 and 14-9 to Spalding Wednesday. Four days later Centre traveled to Hanover, Ind. and split a doubleheader rallying from 7-2 down to win 12-7 in the first game before falling 18-3 in game two. The Colonels, now 3-8 overall, have won all three games on the road this year. Up next for Centre is a single game at home against Thomas More Wednesday, and then a pair of single games at home Friday and Saturday against Alice Lloyd and Miami Hamilton.

DePauw had four games canceled due to inclement weather. The Tigers, 6-3 overall and 0-0 in the SCAC, return to the diamond to open up league play when they travel to Birmingham-Southern on March 20-21 for a three game series. Last season, DePauw won its first game against the Panthers before Birmingham-Southern took the final two in the series.

Hendrix dropped a three-game set against SCAC West Division foe Southwestern over the weekend at Warrior Field. The Warriors and Pirates split Saturday’s twin bill and Southwestern pulled off a come-back win in Sunday’s final game. Hendrix falls to 8-8 overall and 3-6 in conference play (1.5 game back from Austin College). Hendrix and Southwestern combined for just seven runs on Saturday afternoon at a cold and windy Warrior Field. The Warriors came away with a walk-off 2-1 win in the opener and the Pirates earned a 3-1 victory in the night cap.  Hendrix sophomore RHP Teddy Smoyer hurled a gem in the opener with just three hits in 7.0 innings, one run (earned), three walks and seven strikeouts.  He retired the first nine batters he saw and tossed 3.2 hitless innings until a pair of walks and a single gave Southwestern its only run of the game in the fourth. The Warriors collected just six hits, left four runners on base and had three runners caught stealing in the second contest. Southwestern combined to score six runs with two outs in the eighth and ninth innings to post a come-from-behind victory over Hendrix on Sunday.

Millsaps lost a cross-division game at Rhodes on Tuesday 7-1 before splitting a weekend series with Trinity at home by defeating the Tigers Saturday afternoon 12-2 in seven innings before falling 10-7 Sunday afternoon. The Majors used a grand slam from Drew Leonard and a three-run blast by Trey Rountree en route to a conference victory on Saturday to stop the Tigers’ winning streak at six. The Majors scored 12 runs off nine hits and got an impressive outing from starting pitcher Aaron Williams who pitched six innings allowing two runs –one earned—on just four hits to remain perfect at 4-0 on the season. On Sunday, Millsaps stranded 12 base runners and could not come up with the hit necessary to take a lead as Trinity earned the weekend split with a 10-7 victory. The loss is the first for the Majors in conference play in 2010 as they fall to 7-1 in the SCAC and 12-5 overall. Millsaps will be back in action on Tuesday evening as it hosts Illinois Wesleyan beginning at 6 p.m.

Oglethorpe suffered its first losing week of the season by going 1-2 in three contests against Atlanta Christian (W, 12-10), Denison (L, 16-5) and Montclair State (L, 10-6). Against Atlanta Christian on Tuesday, the Chargers held a 10-8 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. In that half-inning, the Petrels scored four runs to take control of the game back from the Chargers. The Petrels then took the lead on an RBI single by Ben Giddens, and extended it to 12-10 when the Chargers shortstop muffed a throw trying to catch Giddens stealing at second. Matt Cornwell picked up the Petrels' first save of the year. John Gibbs got the win in relief, his second of the year. Against Denison, the Petrels gave up 10 runs in the first two innings and were never really in the game. The big blow came in the second, a grand slam which gave the visiting Big Red their 10-run lead. The Petrels fell behind Montlcair State by the score of 10-2 before making some noise in the late innings with 2 in the eighth and 2 in the ninth to tighten the final margin. Adam Brazenas (2-for-5, 2 runs, RBI), Stephen Archer (2-for-5) and Jeff Pope (2-for-3, run scored, RBI) each had multi-hit games to lead the Petrel offensive attack.

Rhodes went 2-2 this week, with a 7-1 win over Millsaps College on Tuesday and a 9-1 victory over MacMurray College on Friday. Rhodes lost to #15 Marietta College 11-8 in 12 innings on Friday night and a 5-0 loss to Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday. Freshman Jackson Baker improved to 2-0 on the year with six strong innings against Millsaps. Baker allowed eight hits, one run, no walks, and struck out five. Junior Hunter Chandler picked up his third save of the year on Tuesday working the final three innings, allowing two hits, no walks, no runs, and struck out one. Sophomore Brian Lainoff improved to 3-1 on the year against MacMurray. Lainoff worked four innings, allowing two hits, and no runs. On Sunday, Freshman Tony Pikos was the tough luck loser, dropping to 0-1 on the year. Pikos went seven innings, allowed three hits, one earned run, and struck out eight. Rhodes will travel to North Carolina and Virginia this week during spring break for games against Lynchburg, Methodist, and Greensboro before returning to Memphis to open conference play this weekend against Oglethorpe. 

Sewanee has won three in a row and four of its last six games with wins this week over Newbury (2) and Gallaudet. The Tigers outscored their opponents 43-13 in three games this week. Against Gallaudet on Sunday, Joe Reilly had two doubles and a triple to lead the Tiger bats. Connor Liston has nine hits in the three games for Sewanee. Greg Bartleski, Logan Ray and Chase Riemer have pitching wins. The Tigers will play six more times in Florida before hosting Emory in Sewanee March 24.

Southwestern rebounded big time this week, taking two must win games out of three at Hendrix over the weekend to move to 5-17 overall and 2-9 in the SCAC. The Pirates narrowly lost game one 2-1 as Hendrix used extra innings to take the victory. SU got back to work in the second game of the double header, winning 3-1. Sunday’s contest found the bats come back alive as Southwestern used a late game rally to win the final game of the series, 6-4. During spring break week the Pirates host non-conference match-ups with UT-Dallas and Cardinal Stritch before hosting Austin College for a pair of games over the weekend.

Trinity finished 3-1 last week, winning twice at home before splitting a weekend SCAC series at Millsaps. Trinity bounced back from a run-rule loss to Millsaps on Saturday, with a 10-7 victory on Sunday to earn the split. The Tigers also defeated DeSales twice, winning 18-4 and 20-8. In 20 games so far this season, the Tigers have scored 10 or more runs 12 times and hold a record of 11-1 in those games. Trinity returns home on Tuesday, beginning a stretch of 10 home games in its next 12 contests. The Tigers will face Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday night, followed by a three-game weekend series with the University of Dallas.
