DePauw's Arita & Riggle tabbed as SCAC Player & Coach of the Year

SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head coaches in the league, Janelle Arita of DePauw University has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Women’s Tennis Player-of-the-Year. In that same balloting, DePauw’s Scott Riggle was voted Women’s Coach-of-the-Year.

Arita, a junior from Mililani, Hawaii, posted a 17-5 singles record (18-4 doubles) and is currently ranked third in the Central region in singles play. In the winter, Arita posted a 4-2 overall record (singles/doubles) at the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Women’s Indoor National Championship to help the Tigers to a fifth-place finish. She helped guide DePauw to its third straight SCAC championship, a 9-0 win over Sewanee, on April 25. Arita has won seven of her last 10 singles matches.

For the sixth time in eight years, DePauw’s Riggle has been recognized by his peers as the SCAC Women’s Tennis Coach-of-the-Year. Only Butch Newman of Trinity (eight times) has more women’s tennis COTY awards than Riggle. Riggle’s ninth-ranked Tigers earned their third straight SCAC title after defeating 30th-ranked Sewanee, 9-0, in the SCAC championship match. Riggle has compiled a 182-69 record in 10 seasons at DePauw, including this year’s 20-4 mark, and led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive year.
