OBERLIN, Ohio - The Trinity University Tigers
doubles team of juniors Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal advanced
to the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Doubles quarterfinals
with a first-round victory Friday at Oberlin College.
Cocanougher, from Southlake, Texas (Carroll); and Kowal, from
Austin, Texas (Anderson); beat the Johns Hopkins team of David
Maldow and Andrew Wang 7-6 (2), 6-2 in the opening round of the
16-team tournament.
The Tiger duo will face third seeds Isaac Stein and Max Woods of Washington-St. Louis at 2 p.m. Eastern Time Saturday in the quarterfinals. The semifinals and final are slated for Sunday, with the semis scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern. The doubles championship match time will be announced.
Trinity’s two-time All-America doubles team is competing in its second NCAA Tournament. Cocanougher and Kowal advanced to last year’s semifinals.
Earlier in the day, sophomore Max Frey of Tulsa, Okla. (Holland Hall), was eliminated in the first round of singles. Top seed Dillon Pottish of Emory beat Frey 6-2, 6-3, in the 32-draw event. Frey was a 2009 All-American, and played in his second NCAA Tournament.
Trinity’s men’s team is led by first-year head coach Russell McMindes. The Tigers (18-10) won the SCAC Championship, the NCAA West regional, and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
