Baker & Cook named SCAC Swimmers of the Year; Hayes and Martin named SCAC  Divers of the Year

SUWANEE, Ga. - Based on exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, John Cook of DePauw University and Catie Baker of DePauw University – were named the league’s male and female Swimmer-of-the-Year, respectively while Hunter Hayes of Centre College and Lindsay Martin of Trinity University – were selected as the SCAC male and female Diver-of-the-Year, respectively.

DePauw’s Cook, a senior from Leawood, Kan., finished first in two different individual events at the SCAC Championships (50 and 100 free) earning NCAA “B” cut times in both events. He was also part of the Tigers’ all-conference relay teams in the 200 free, 400 free and 800 free which all earned NCAA “B” cut times. The 200 free team set a new SCAC championship record. Cook also swam in the 200 medley relay which finished first with a new SCAC championship record.

At the NCAA Championships, Cook tallied top 10 finishes in the 100 and 200 free while posting a 17th finish the 50 free. He also anchored the 2nd place 200 free relay with a split of 19.91 seconds. Cook anchored the 5th place 400 free relay with a split of 44.81 seconds and also anchored the 10th place 800 free relay with a split 1:40.39. The 200 free and 800 free relay teams set new school records. Cook served as team captain the past two years and totaled 25 first place finishes in 2009-10 while scoring 290 individual team points for the Tigers.

DePauw’s Baker, a sophomore from Cedar Rapids, Iowa was the high point scorer for the Tigers this year, scoring 499 points individually (615.75 points with relays figured in) and became the single season scoring leader for DePauw. She was named SCAC Swimmer of the Meet with wins in the 200 IM and the 100 & 200 breast strokes. The 200 breast stroke was an SCAC meet and open record. Baker also achieved an “A” cut in the 200 breast stroke and “B” cuts in the 200 IM and 100 Breast. 

At the NCAA Championships Baker earned All-American honors with her sixth place finish in the 100 breast stroke, with a new school record of 1:04.98. She earned honorable mention All-American in the 200 IM with a 13th place finish (2:06.56) and the 200 breast stroke with a 10th place finish of 2:20.39, which established a new school record as well as SCAC Open record.
Besides breaking her own individual school records in the 100 & 200 Breaststroke, Baker was also a member of the 800 free relay which set a new school record as well as SCAC Meet and Open records at the SCAC championships.

Centre’s Hayes, a senior from Hopkinsville, Ky., Hunter took second place in the 1-meter diving competition at the SCAC championship and won the 3-meter competition. He posted scores of 422.90 and 468.05 respectively while earning SCAC Diver of the Meet honors for a second consecutive year.

At the NCAA championships, Hayes earned All-America status in the 3-meter event while earning honorable mention All-America in the 1-meter event. He finished eighth on the 3-meter and 14th on the 1-meter.

Trinity’s Martin, a senior from Longview, Texas, tallied second place finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. She posted scores of 451.75 and 459.30 respectively.

At the NCAA championships, Martin earned Diver of the Meet honors after winning the national championship in the 1-meter competition with a score of 472.25. She also finished second in the 3-meter event behind teammate Hayley Emerick. Martin scored 490.90 points while earning All-America honors in both diving events. For her efforts, Martin was named the NCAA Division III National Diver of the Year.
