Austin College fell
2-1 in an overtime heartbreaker to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday
before getting rained out on Sunday and are now 0-3 on the year.
Against UMHB, the Crusaders scored on a penalty kick midway through
the second half but the 'Roos answered when Luis Castillo punched
the rebound from Alex Dawson's shot in the 76th minute to knot
things up and send the game into overtime. However, in the first
overtime the Crusaders got a goal with just 2:41 left to hand
Austin College the loss. Austin College held a 13-9 shot advantage
in the first half but UMHB outshot the 'Roos 14-7 in the second
half and overtime. Austin College is back in action this week when
they host Trinity to open SCAC play on Friday.
Birmingham-Southern completed the weekend sweep at
the Kyle Rote, Jr. Classic with wins over Washington & Lee
(2-1) and Emory & Henry Wasps (6-0) at Sewanee. With the two
wins, the Panthers move to 4-0 on the season. Tyler Evans scored
both Panther goals on Saturday, with the first coming from Nicholas
Reitmeier in the 21st-minute. Evans scored again in the 57th-minute
off a connector from Andrew Shelton to seal the win. The Panthers
out-shot Wash. & Lee 10-2 on the day. Shachar Hovan played the
full 90 minutes in goal for the Panthers, with one save and
allowing the sole General's goal. Garner Shivers scored three goals
in seven minutes of the second half to bury the Wasps on Sunday.
The Panthers dominated from start to finish, out-shooting the Wasps
28-4 on the day (Including 19-3 in shots-on-goal). Shachar Hovan
put in another flawless performance with two saves in 63 minutes of
work, and Charlie Boles held the shutout with one save in 27
minutes. The Panthers cleaned up the individual awards, and named
four players to the All-Tournament team. Tyler Evans was name
Offensive MVP of the Classic, Andrew Stein was Defensive MVP,
Garner Shivers and Nicholas Reitmeier were also named to the
All-Tournament team. The Panthers will travel to St. Louis this
weekend to take on Washington University and Fontbonne
University.
Centre continued its winning ways this week,
taking 3 wins out of 3 games as they near the beginning of
conference play. On Tuesday night, Centre picked up its first
shut-out of the year in a 2-0 home win against Mount St.
Joseph’s. The Colonels then hosted the 20th Annual Bob Allen
Nissan Classic in Danville, KY, with Wilmington College, Asbury
College, and Berry College all coming in for the tournament. On
Friday night, Centre used 6 second half goals from 6 different
players to propel them to a 6-3 win over the Quakers of Wilmington
College. In the tournament final on Saturday night, Centre defeated
NAIA opponent Berry College in a 5-4 double-overtime thriller to
win the classic. The Colonels, 4-2-0, take on Hanover College at
home on Tuesday night before traveling north to Illinois to take on
the likes of the University of Chicago on Friday and Illinois
Wesleyan on Saturday.
In an effort to bolster its injury-riddled roster, Colorado
College added freshman forward Ryan Jaeger and sophomore
forward Travis Boccard to the lineup and the move paid immediate
dividends. Jaeger’s first career tally, 30:09 into the first
half of his first collegiate game, gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead on
Saturday against Whitman College. But the Missionaries tied the
game just 2:24 left in regulation and won the game in the sixth
minute of overtime when a shot deflected off a CC defender and
found the back of the net. Senior midfielder Jordan Reese came
within inches of winning it for the Tigers when his rocket from 20
yards out hit the cross bar in the opening minute of sudden death.
On Sunday, Colorado College overcame a penalty kick and a red card
to battle Montclair State University to a scoreless draw.
MSU’s Joseph Cullen sent a penalty kick over the crossbar in
the 61st minute, and then the Red Hawks played the final 12:41 of
overtime with a man advantage after CC’s David Van Sicklen
was given a red card. Montclair State (4-0-1) controlled play
during the first half, launching eight shots and taking five corner
kicks. Jordan Reese registered the Tigers’ first shot on goal
14:32 into the second half, and that seemed to energize the Tigers.
Colorado College (1-3-1) had its best scoring opportunities just
over five minutes later when Reese, Ryan Jaeger and Chris Ellis had
shots on goal, but were denied by Teddy Ritter who finished with
eight saves. Senior goalkeeper Brian Engle made a career-high nine
saves en route to his eighth career shutout. It was CC’s
first scoreless tie since Sept. 24, 2004, against Wartburg College.
The draw snapped Montclair State’s regular-season winning
streak at 22 matches.
No. 25 DePauw improved to 3-0 on the season with
its third straight shutout in a 1-0 win over visiting Franklin.
Christopher Lee scored a header with an assist from Alex Johnson at
29:00 for the game's lone goal. The Tigers outshot Franklin 15-5
and held a 5-3 edge in corners. The 3-0 start is the best since the
2003 team opened the season with a 4-0 record and three straight
shutouts to start the year matches the 1999 team's start. The 1980
squad opened the season with five straight shutouts.
Hendrix split a pair
of matches in Irving, Texas over the weekend after suffering a
double-overtime midweek loss. The Warriors midweek loss came
against in-state rival University of the Ozarks, 3-2. Hendrix then
took a 3-1 win over McMurry University on Friday, before falling to
University of Dallas, 1-0, on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon. The
Warriors earned their first ever National Soccer Collegiate Coaches
of America regional ranking last week by being named 12th in the
West Region, joining fellow SCAC members Southwestern (3rd) and
Trinity (4th). Hendrix now stands at 3-2 after this weekend’s
action and opens the SCAC season on Friday against Rhodes. First
years Connor Silvestri and Grant Womack connected for
Hendrix’s two goals against Ozarks. First year Kevin Gregory,
sophomore Jonathan Birdwell and senior Thomas Robins scored their
first goals of the season to lift the Warriors past McMurry. Heavy
rain for three straight days turned Dallas’ field into a
slip-n-slide and forced Hendrix’s high-speed offense to come
to a screeching halt.
Millsaps went 1-2 on the week after dropping a
pair of one-goal matches to LeTourneau and Truett-McConnell.
Penalty kicks proved costly in both losses, with Millsaps missing a
combined four in the two matches – three vs LeTourneau alone.
The Majors’ lone win of the week came at Piedmont College on
Sunday, 3-2, thanks to senior Andres Colocho’s game-winner in
the 79th minute. Millsaps (4-2) will close out a three-game road
stretch on Saturday at Huntingdon College (0-3) with kickoff set
for 3 p.m.
Oglethorpe tied their only competition of the week
against the Maryville Scots, 0-0. The game played through two
overtimes with neither team able to crack the scoreboard. Petrel
keeper Michael Hadjisimos stood strong to record the shutout. Along
the way, Hadjisimos saved 13 Scot shots including 5 in the overtime
sessions to earn the tie. With the result, Oglethorpe is 2-1-1 on
the season and will travel to face Reinhardt this Thursday at 4:00
p.m.
Rhodes lost to #15 Principia College 3 -1 Friday
night. Brett Simek, junior MF from Milstadt Ill, scored the lone
Lynx goal. The team rebounded with a solid performance at
Washington University Sunday, leading the game 1-0 until a free
kick by Washington University Tied the game in the 77th minute. The
game ended 1-1 after 2 OT’s.
Sewanee hosted the 18th annual Kyle Rote Jr.
Invitational this weekend and went 1-1 with a 4-0 win over Emory
and Henry and a tough 1-0 loss to Washington and Lee. The Tigers
are now 2-2 so far in 2009. Sewanee's Patrick Johnson, Chris Grover
and Daniel Drewry were named to the All-Tournament team for their
play. The Tigers will host LaGrange Friday night before travelling
to Huntingdon on Sunday.
No. 20 Southwestern traveled to Abilene, Texas
this weekend to take on the University of Texas-Dallas and Hardin
Simmons University in the second installment of the Conference
Challenge. Despite being nearly even on shots the Pirates fell 3-1
to UTD on Friday afternoon. Josh Spencer had the lone goal for SU,
assisted by Alex Keller. Sophomore keeper Nick Pierce recorded
eleven saves in the contest. After a quick turnaround the Pirates
faced host school HSU on Saturday and fell 2-1. Spencer once again
had the goal for Southwestern. The Pirates are now 3-2 on the
season open conference action on Friday at Colorado College.
No. 25 Trinity extended its winning streak to four
games with a pair of road wins over the weekend. Trinity blanked
Hardin-Simmons (4-0) and UT-Dallas (1-0) in Abilene, Texas, this
past weekend, improving its record to 4-1-0 this season. Five
different players scored goals for the Tigers over the weekend,
with Tommy Barros and Ben Grossman picking up game-winners.
Grossman now has three GW goals in the first five games for
Trinity. The Tigers open up SCAC play this weekend, facing off
against Austin College and Colorado College on the road. Trinity
defeated Austin College 5-1 and Colorado College 1-0 in San Antonio
last season. Cameron Hogsett scored two goals and an assist in the
win over AC. The Colorado College game was decided by a penalty
kick in the 89th minute.
