SUWANEE, Ga. - SCAC teams stepped up their level of competition last week with games against a ranked Division III team and two Division II teams. Birmingham-Southern and Sewanee dropped games to 13th-ranked Washington & Lee while Southwestern lost a pair to Dominican (Calif.) and Grand Canyon (Ariz.).
AROUND THE SCAC
Birmingham-Southern
played well in their home opener on Tuesday against Washington
& Lee, but the #13 Generals were too much for the Panthers,
taking the 15-3 win in Panther Stadium. The Panthers had some good
defensive stretches, holding even for long stretches of the game,
but only three of the Panthers’ 20 shots found their way past
the Generals’ goalie. The Panthers held the #13 team in the
nation scoreless for the last 6:30 of the half, but the Generals'
offense broke through one last time with nine seconds on the clock
to give them the five-point edge into the break. BSC will look for
its first win of the season next week when they host Greensboro
College on Tuesday March 9 at 7:00 at Panther Stadium.
Colorado College completed a sweep of the
state’s top two Division I club teams with a 9-7 victory over
the University of Colorado on Saturday. Long stick midfielder
Michael McGeary scored twice during a four-goal run late in the
first half that put CC ahead for good and the Tigers held on to
defeat the Buffs for the second year in a row. McGeary triggered
the outburst when he intercepted a pass and went the length of the
field to put CC ahead, 5-4, with 5:06 remaining in the second
period. Hunter Sprole and Brendan Gangl struck for a goal apiece
during a span of 40 seconds late in the half, and then McGeary
scooped up a ground ball in the defensive zone and raced 70 yards
to score what proved to be the game-winning goal 6:37 into the
third period. The Tigers had a 46-29 advantage in total shots,
including a 24-18 edge in shots on goal. CC converted on three of
11 man-up opportunities, while the Buffs were 1-for-9. Colorado
College is idle until March 16 when it begins the Division III
portion of its schedule by playing host to McDaniel College.
Hendrix suffered an 8-3 season opening loss to
Carthage College on Saturday morning in St. Louis, Mo. The two
teams were originally scheduled to play Feb. 21 but heavy
thunderstorms forced the two teams to reschedule. In-game
statistics were not provided at the neutral site, however, each
school will use game film to record stats as soon as possible.
Hendrix sophomore midfielder Alex Wilkinson scored two goals and
junior attackman Clayton Cersonsky added one score.
Sewanee fell 13-4 to #14 Washington and Lee
Wednesday after trailing 9-1 at the half. Pierce Leonard led
Sewanee with two goals in the match. He has two goals and an assist
so far to lead the 2010 Sewanee scoring effort. In the back, goalie
Stewart Calder has 29 saves in two games and has faced 84 shots.
The Tigers also topped Rhodes' club team 13-4 on Saturday. They
will host Carthage Sunday night.
Southwestern opened its inaugural season this
weekend with three games in California against tough competition.
Thursday SU faced Whittier on their home field and Whittier
continued where they left off with their home opener scoring
numerous times in the opening quarter and continued to add to the
total as Southwestern fell 24-4. The Pirates scored their first
NCAA goal to open the third quarter when Jamie Long found Edward
Williams who found the back of the net. Saturday's match saw the
Pirates begin slow again but had a great third quarter but the
defense was pressured all game as they fell to Grand Canyon
University 12-5. On Sunday, SU took on Dominican and led through
the first quarter, 2-1, but Dominican held the Pirates scoreless in
the final half as Southwestern fell 20-6. Despite the three losses
the Pirates had a good trip and continue to make vast improvements
as the season progresses. They next head to St. Louis, MO where
they will play Carthage College on March 5th and then Fontbonne on
March 7th.
