SUWANEE, Ga. - The Millsaps College Majors clinched at least a share of the SCAC title with a 61-7 win at Sewanee. Both the DePauw University Tigers and Centre College Colonels picked up wins last weekend and remain in the hunt for the league championship.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College had
the weekend off last week. The ‘Roos will prepare to travel
to Greencastle, Ind. for a date with the DePauw University Tigers
on Nov 7. In last season’s meeting, Austin College found
themselves down 20-7 early in the third quarter only to see a late
rally fall short in a 31-28 loss. The ‘Roos rolled up 296
yards rushing on the afternoon, a full 200 more than DePauw.
Leading the day for Austin College was Zach Mamot who tallied 91
rushing yards and one touchdown. The ‘Roos actually had three
players tally more than 60 rushing yards. Quarterback Andy Braly
completed 13-of-25 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
Birmingham-Southern put up a good fight on
Saturday against DePauw, but was ultimately unable to overcome the
Tigers, losing 35-21 on a rainy, chilly day at Panther Stadium.
Junior quarterback Joe Thigpen rushed for two touchdowns, while
freshman halfback Shawn Morris recorded the third. Thigpen was
13-of-23 with one interception, and the DePauw defense managed six
sacks against him. He recorded 172 yards passing and 42 yards
rushing on 27 carries. Junior tailback Walter Arrington led with 53
yards rushing on 10 carries, and freshman Johnny Lawroski led with
61 yards on six catches. Sophomore defensive back/punter Kyle
Sebestyen led the defense with nine tackles (4 solo, 5 assisted),
and freshman Chris Reeves recorded two interceptions, tying the BSC
single-game record. The Panthers are at home again this weekend for
Homecoming 2009, facing in-state rival Huntingdon College in the
first annual Wesley Cup Game.
Centre bounced back from its first loss of the
season to hand visiting Rhodes a 37-10 loss in the Colonels' final
home game of the season. It was also Senior Day for 23 Centre
seniors and Homecoming on campus. The Colonels' offense out-gained
Rhodes 448-230 in total offensive yards, including a 265-61
advantage in rushing yards. Centre's defense, which went without a
turnover for the first time in 49 games last week, forced three
turnovers against the Lynx, including two interceptions and a
fumble recovery. The Colonels will look to win at least a share of
the SCAC championship Saturday, Nov. 2, when they travel to Trinity
University for their final regular season game of the year.
DePauw improved to 6-1 and extended its win streak
to five with a 35-21 win at Birmingham-Southern. The Tigers scored
on each of their first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead. They
later led by as many as 21 at 28-7. The Panthers closed the gap to
28-21 with a pair of touchdowns. DePauw added an insurance score
late in the fourth which capped off a 12-play, 67-yard drive. The
Tigers outgained the Panthers, 355-306 including a 323-172 edge in
passing yards. Spud Dick completed 24-of-31 passes for 323 yards
(13th career 300-yard passing game) and three scores. Bryan
Mulligan hauled in seven for 59 yards and moved to within one catch
of tying the DePauw career record of 195 by Jay True (1977-80).
Brayden Dahlstrom caught six for 70 yards and Alex Koors had five
for 142 yards. Defensively, the Tigers totaled 12 tackles for
losses totaling 61 yards. They also had seven sacks for 52 yards
led by Tyler Doane and Ryan Woodard with two each. The Tigers
improved to 4-0 in road games this year and extended their road win
streak to six. Koors posted his ninth career 100-yard receiving
game and fifth this year. With a win over Austin, the Tigers can
clinch a share of their third SCAC title (2000, 2005).
Millsaps (6-3, 5-1
SCAC) clinched at least a share of its fourth straight SCAC
Championship with a 61-7 road win at Sewanee last weekend. The
Majors rolled up 466 yards of total offense and held Sewanee to
just 135, scoring five touchdowns on the ground, two through the
air and one by way of a school-record breaking 75-yard kick return
from junior Michael Galatas. The return specialist set a new
single-season record of kick return yards and became the first
player in school history with three career kick returns for a
score. The Majors jumped out to a commanding 40-0 halftime lead,
scoring on their first four possessions and capitalizing on a pair
of Miles Sager blocked punts and Galatas’ kick return. Shane
Bowser also found the end zone on the ground for the first time
this year on his 94th carry, scoring from 15-yards out for
Millsaps' first score. Sager had a team-high eight tackles, a
forced fumble and two blocked punts to lead the Majors' defense,
while Will Hawkins added six tackles (2.0 tackles-for-loss) and
Kyle Hughes had four tackles and their lone sack of the day. Graves
stretched his career-best streak without an interception to 192
attempts, throwing for his 19th touchdown in the last six weeks to
go along with 1,529 yards. Millsaps will enjoy an off week Nov. 7
before returning to action against Birmingham-Southern on Nov. 14
at Harper Davis Field as part of Senior Day.
Rhodes lost its seventh consecutive game of the
2009 season to Centre College, 37-10 in Danville, Ky. on October
31st. Senior defensive back Andrew Boucher led the defense with 10
tackles. Junior linebacker Andrew Meier had 9 tackles and leads the
SCAC in tackles (88), is 3rd in sacks (6.5) and 2nd in tackles for
loss (11.5). The Lynx have a bye week before they host the
University of the South on November 14th.
Sewanee hosted Millsaps in SCAC football play
Saturday and Millsaps topped the host Tigers 61-7 after leading
40-0 at the half. Eighteen Sewanee senior players and student
assistant coach Basil Wilson were honored before the game in honor
of Senior Day. In the first quarter, Shane Bowser scored two of
Millsaps touchdowns, while Kenny Metzger added a running TD. Taylor
Russolino added a field goal in the first and total, had eight
PATs. The Majors added a safety and two touchdowns in the second
quarter for the 40-0 halftime total. In the second half, Sewanee
held the Majors to 21 points and Zeke Wilson highlighted the
Sewanee effort with a 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Defensively, 2009 preseason All-American Chalankis Brown led
Sewanee's effort with 11 total tackles. As a team, Millsaps had the
edge in total yardage, 466-135, and had 19 first downs compared to
seven for Sewanee. Sewanee is still looking for a win in 2009 and
will play at Rhodes in two weeks in the annual Orgill Cup Game.
Trinity lost its second straight game on Saturday,
as NAIA Azusa Pacific won 55-27 on Saturday afternoon. Trinity gave
up 50 or more points for just the 20th time in school history,
which dates back to 1900 and spans over 900 games. Chris Baer led
the Tigers in both rushing and receiving, totaling over 170 yards
in the game. Baer rushed 15 times for 73 yards and a touchdown, and
also caught seven passes for 105 yards and another touchdown. It
was the first 100-yard receiving game in Baer’s career, as
his previous career high was 62 yards. Quarterback Robert Davidson
returned to the starting lineup for the first time since week
three, completing 20-35 through the air for 243 yards and two
touchdowns. Caleb Urban had three kickoff returns for a total of
111 yards in Saturday’s game, including a 58-yard return to
start his day. Trinity will host Centre this weekend to continue
SCAC play. Centre and Trinity meet for 21st time, with Trinity
holding a 13-7 edge in the series. The Tigers previously won seven
in a row against the Colonels from 2001-2007, but Centre won last
year’s meeting 26-17 in Danville, Ky.
