Men's Lacrosse Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - The inaugural SCAC men's lacrosse season continued to give conference teams trouble as the Colorado College Tigers remain the only league team to have won a game nearly a month into the season. Colorado College and Sewanee both had last week off.

AROUND THE SCAC

Birmingham-Southern continued its brutal pre-conference schedule this week, falling 15-3 to the College of Wooster in Ohio.  Matt Ivie scored three goals on the day, leading the Panthers, while Cameron Hyde added the fourth.  The Panthers were out shot 52-24 and lost the ground war as well, 31-21 on ground balls. Wooster was also more successful in face-offs, winning 20-of-23.  Cameron Overton collected 12 saves in goal for the Panthers, playing the bulk of the minutes at 51:06 and Andrew Huffman grabbed one save in his 8:54 in goal at the end.  The Panthers will return to Panther Stadium this Tuesday to host Greensboro College in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.

Colorado College completed a sweep of the state’s top two Division I club teams with a 9-7 victory over the University of Colorado on Feb. 27. Long stick midfielder Michael McGeary scored twice during a four-goal run late in the first half that put CC ahead for good and the Tigers held on to defeat the Buffs for the second year in a row. McGeary triggered the outburst when he intercepted a pass and went the length of the field to put CC ahead, 5-4, with 5:06 remaining in the second period. Hunter Sprole and Brendan Gangl struck for a goal apiece during a span of 40 seconds late in the half, and then McGeary scooped up a ground ball in the defensive zone and raced 70 yards to score what proved to be the game-winning goal 6:37 into the third period. The Tigers had a 46-29 advantage in total shots, including a 24-18 edge in shots on goal. CC converted on three of 11 man-up opportunities, while the Buffs were 1-for-9. Colorado College is idle until March 16 when it begins the Division III portion of its schedule by playing host to McDaniel College.

Hendrix went 0-2 this week after a Midwest road trip to Kenyon College on Friday afternoon and Trine University on Sunday afternoon. Hendrix opened its road trip with a 14-3 loss to Kenyon on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University. Sophomore attackman Ben Nelson led the Warriors with three assists in the contest. The Lords stormed out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and made it 5-0 with the first goal of the second quarter. Hendrix cracked the scoreboard with 4:11 remaining before the half on junior attackman Clayton Cersonsky’s goal off an assist from Nelson. The Warriors went scoreless in the third quarter, while the Lords added four goals to their advantage including a score with just 11 ticks left on the clock to make it 10-1 after 45 minutes of action. Nelson assisted first year midfielder Connor Corley and junior midfielder Dan Fox for a pair of goals to start the final quarter. The Lords won 13-of-21 face offs and out shot the Warriors 49-20. Junior midfielder Tim Wojcik led the Warriors with five shots. Cersonsky led the way with two goals in the Warriors’ 13-5 loss to Trine on Sunday afternoon. Trine scored the game’s first goal with 7:59 left in the first quarter and Hendrix tied the game a minute later on a score from sophomore midfielder Alex Wilkinson. The Thunder answered with a goal just 22 seconds later and would take a 2-1 advantage out of the first quarter.

Sewanee did not play last week.

Southwestern continued their tough road trips to open the season as they headed to St. Louis this week to face Carthage and Fontbonne. The Pirates fell 19-3 in Friday night's game and despite starting strong in Sunday's match they eventually fell 25-5. SU is still searching for that first will as they move to 0-5 on the season and will look to make it happen at their first home game on Saturday against Trine University at 1:00 p.m.
