SUWANEE, Ga. - Trinity remained undefeated over the weekend after two road wins including their first conference win against Austin College on Friday afternoon. Hendrix and Southwestern are both tied with Trinity atop the SCAC standings with 1-0 conference records. A full slate of conference games is scheduled for the weekend with eight teams in SCAC action.

Austin College
dropped a pair of overtime heartbreakers against Trinity and
Southwestern over the weekend, falling in the final moments of
double overtime in a 2-1 loss to the Tigers and surrendering a goal
with three minutes remaining in the first overtime against the
Pirates. Against Trinity, the ‘Roos jumped out to a 1-0 lead
at the 63:21 mark when Natalie Nelms headed home a feed from JoDee
Williams, but 23 seconds later the Tigers knotted the game and in
the 107th minute of action Trinity found the net to make it a 2-1
final. Kaitlin Elledge made seven saves in the game. Against
Southwestern the ‘Roos again struck first when Shelley Casey
found Emma Treu for her fourth goal of the year in the 19th minute,
but just moments into the second half the Pirates knotted the game
with a penalty kick. Southwestern went ahead in the 62nd minute but
11 minutes later Casey scored off of assists from Ali Ryan and
Kelsey D’Amore to send the game into overtime, where the
Pirates would ultimately get the game winner at the 96:50 mark.
This week the ‘Roos have just one game, a Friday match at
home against the University of Dallas.
Birmingham-Southern only got in one of their
scheduled two this week thanks to an uncooperative Mother Nature on
Friday. The Panthers’ game with Emory University was rained
out and will be played this Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The game on Sunday
at Alabama State was a rout. The Panthers overwhelmed the Hornets,
9-2 in Montgomery. Six Panthers netted goals in the match, with
Alicia Plotky, Linda Amaya, and Dani Mayer all scoring twice. They
will start SCAC play this weekend, following the make-up date with
Emory, with Rhodes at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Hendrix at 2:00 p.m.
on Sunday.
Centre split in this week's matches, earning a win
on Wednesday and a tie on Saturday. After being scoreless through
two matches, Centre was able to find the back of the net Wednesday
evening, defeating Hanover College 3-0. Saturday afternoon, Centre
played NCAA No.14 ranked Denison University to a 0-0 tie through
double overtime. Centre's next match-ups will be conference openers
on the road against Oglethorpe University and Sewanee
University.
DePauw split their two matches during the week as
they dropped a 5-1 home decision to fourth-ranked Wheaton before
taking a 2-1 win at Ohio Wesleyan. Wheaton scored twice in the
opening four minutes and extended the margin to 4-0 before
Alexandra Ehr delivered the Tigers' lone goal. in Sunday's game at
Ohio Wesleyan, the Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Emelie
Johansson's header from Julia Drummond's corner kick at 14:11
before the Battling Bishops tied the contest at 29:59. Kelly
Kohlndorfer scored the game-winner on Ehr's assist with just 6:09
left. DePauw lifted its record to 1-4-2 with the victory.
Hendrix College went undefeated this week with
conference opening win over Rhodes College on Friday night and a
double-overtime win over Coe College on Sunday afternoon. The
Warriors now stand at 5-1 on the year and 1-0 in SCAC play. Hendrix
posted a 2-0 shutout on a rainy Friday under the lights for its
first victory over Rhodes in six seasons, while junior midfielder
Amelia Wildenborg smashed the golden goal home from 35 yards out
with just 14 ticks left in the second overtime against Coe on
Sunday. Senior forward Caitlin McGeehan scored her second goal of
the year off an assist from first year forward Mel Roach in the
33rd minute to put the Warriors on top, 1-0 against the Lynx.
Warriors’ sophomore defender Hannah McGrew headed her first
goal of the season off a corner kick from junior midfielder Lydia
Nash in the 54th minute. Nash leads the conference with five
assists this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Mosley had an
outstanding night protecting the net with 16 saves, eight in each
half, for her fourth shutout of the season. The Warrior defense
held strong and denied 20 shot attempts and three corners from the
Lynx. Hendrix tallied 14 shots, 11 on-goal. After a scoreless 109
minutes and combined 32 shots between Hendrix College and Coe
College on Sunday afternoon Wildenborg took a pass from McGrew and
hammered home her first goal of the season for the win. Hendrix
senior forward Kate Burnett posted a game-high seven shots, five
on-goal, Nash added four shots, three on-goal. The Warriors totaled
22 shots and seven corner kicks in the match. Mosley had another
standout game in front of the net with six saves for her fifth
shutout of the year.
Millsaps went 1-0-1 on the week with a double
overtime tie to rival Belhaven College on Friday and a 4-0 win on
the road at Division I Alcorn State on Sunday to move to 5-1-1
overall on the year. Senior Megan Sullivan’s first career hat
trick gave Millsaps the spark they needed to get a win Sunday,
while goalkeeper Sarah Nelin posted two shutouts (shared on Sunday)
to give the Majors a total of four through seven games in 2009. The
Majors will return to Jackson this weekend, playing host to Hendrix
and Rhodes College on Friday and Sunday. Both matches will be
streamed live on the internet at www.gomajors.com.
The only match for scheduled for
Oglethorpe this past week was against Emory
University and was washed out by rain. The Petrels play at Piedmont
on September 22 before beginning SCAC play versus Centre this
Friday.
Rhodes opened SCAC play against Hendrix College on
the wrong end of the game. Hendrix defeated the Lynx in Conway, AR
2-0 ending a 6 year losing streak to Rhodes. Hendrix would score a
goal in each half. Caitlin McGeehan scored in the 34th minute and
Hannah McGrew added the insurance goal in the 55th. Rhodes outshot
the Warriors 20 to 14, but were unable to get a goal from Hendrix
goalkeeper Allison Mosley. Mosley made 16 saves, while Becca Clarin
made 8 saves for Rhodes. On Saturday, the Lynx defeated visiting
Coe College in Memphis, TN 2-1. Three freshmen were responsible for
all of the scoring for Rhodes. Leading the way was Mae Casey (New
Orleans, LA), with a goal and an assist. Casey would score the
first goal of the game on an assist from fellow Freshmen Betsy
Peterson (Knoxville, TN) just before half time. With just under 16
minutes remaining, Casey would find Kate Danagher (Winter Park, FL)
for the eventual game winning goal. Coe College would get a goal
back from Taylor Allen with under 10 minutes left to play, Becca
Clarin (Clarendon Hills, IL) and Stephanie Sermonet (Brentwood, TN)
would split time in goal, making a combined 4 saves. Erin Ridley
made 7 saves for Coe. The Lynx out shot Coe 12 to 5 and also held
the edge in corner kicks 4-2. The Lynx return to action when they
face cross town rival Christian Brothers University at Rhodes
College on 9/23 at 5pm.
Sewanee remained unbeaten at 4-0 with a 1-0
shutout of Division II Christian Brothers in Memphis Sunday.
La'Toyia Slay scored the winner for Sewanee off of a Bess Goodman
assist. Britt Williams earned the shutout in goal. Williams has
earned three shutouts in four games played so far this year. The
4-0 Tigers, under the new leadership of head coach Patrick
Johnston, will host DePauw and Centre to open SCAC play this
weekend.
Southwestern put two more notches in the win
column this week with victories over the University of Dallas and
Austin College. The Pirates scored within the first three minutes
of the contest against UD and then again early in the second half
before cruising to a 4-0 win in Dallas. A.J. Andreola had two goals
in the game while Lauren Kjolhede recorded one goal and one assist.
Sunday, Southwestern opened up conference action against Austin
College and won in overtime 3-2. Amy Douglas led the way for SU
with one goal and two assists including the assist to Maria
Pollifrone for the game winning goal in the 96th minute. With their
6-1 overall record in tow, the Pirates head to California for two
games in the coming week. They face UC-Santa Cruz on Friday and
LaVerne on Saturday.
No. 6 Trinity remained unbeaten with a pair of
road wins this past week, including a double-overtime win over
Austin College in the SCAC opener. The Tigers opened up conference
Friday night at Austin College, and for the second straight year,
the two teams battled to a tie through regulation. Austin College
actually scored first – Trinity’s first goal allowed
this season – but the Tigers answered just 23 seconds later
to tie the game 1-1 in the 64th minute. With less than four minutes
left in the second OT, Brianna Young scored the game-winner to lift
the Tigers to the win. Young also scored a game-winner in the 107th
minute against Austin College in San Antonio last season. On
Sunday, Trinity took on the University of Dallas to finish off the
weekend, posting the team’s fifth shutout of the season for a
4-0 win. Young scored two goals in the game, assisting on the other
two goals scored for the Tigers. Trinity returns home this weekend
to face Our Lady of the Lake University on Friday night.
