LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – After exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), the league office today announced its 2016 Women's Outdoor Track & Field postseason awards.
Bailey Drury of Trinity Univeristy was selected as SCAC Women's Track Athlete-of-the-Year while teammate Britney Sullivan was voted SCAC Women's Field Athlete-of-the-Year. Allysa Warling of Colorado College took home SCAC Women's Track & Field Newcomer-of-the-Year honors while the Trinity coaching staff, led by head coach Marcus Whitehead, was selected Women's Track & Field Staff-of-the-Year.
Drury, a senior from Tampa, Fla., earned her second consecutive Track Athlete-of-the-Year award after finishing her Trinity career as the SCAC champion in the 400-meter dash, as well as the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. In the 400, she posted a time of 58.19 seconds to take the title. She also took second in the 200, posting a time of 26.10 and third in the 100, clocking in at 13.25 seconds.
Drury was a unanimous selection for Track Athlete-of-the-Year.
Sullivan, a sophomore from Dallas, Texas, earned the Field Athlete-of-the-Year honor after continuing her undefeated conference championship streak in the horizontal jumps, winning both the long jump (5.23m) and triple jump (11.30m) titles this year. She also went on to qualify for the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this May, finishing 10th nationally.
Sullivan earned three all-region honors from the USTFCCCA after recording top five marks in both horizontal jumps, as well as for her participation in Trinity's 4x100 meter relay.
Sullivan earned three first place votes from the coaches in garnering SCAC Women's Field Athlete-of-the-Year while Texas Lutheran's Meredith Berger earned the remaining two votes.
Warling, a freshman from Loveland, Colorado, was recognized as the Newcomer-of-the-Year after an outstanding performance at the SCAC Championships. She placed second in the 10,000 meter run, finishing less than half of a second behind her teammate, and posting a time of 40:54.22, which marked a new personal record. She also won the 5,000 meter run, clocking in at 18:23.99. Later in the season, Warling dropped her 10,000m time by more than two minutes, posting a 37:38.33, which set a new CC record. Her mark in the 5,000m is a freshman record at CC.
Warling garnered three votes for Newcomer-of-the-Year, while Texas Lutheran's Courtnee Priour picked up the remaining two votes.
Finally, the SCAC Women's Track & Field Staff-of-the-Year honor went to the Trinity University staff after another outstanding season. The Tigers won the SCAC women's track & field championship, defeating second-place Texas Lutheran by 65 points.
The Trinity staff was the coaches' unanimous selection for Staff-of-the-Year.
