Colorado College's Grossenbacher; Trinity's Carwile highlight 2015 All-SCAC Men's Soccer Team

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – In exclusive voting by the league’s head men’s soccer coaches, Max Grossenbacher of Colorado College was selected SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year and Tom Carwile was voted SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year. Complete Release

In that same balloting, Trinity’s Christian Sakshaug was named SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year and his head coach, Paul McGinlay, was voted SCAC Coach-of-the-Year.

Max Grossenbacher, a forward from Austin, Texas, leads the SCAC in almost every offensive category, including goals scored (9 – tied for the lead), assists (9), points (27) and shots (98). The senior captain recorded these stats while playing center forward – a position he had never previously played.  He was also tops in the league in goals scored (7), assists (7) and points (21) during conference-only play, leading the Tigers to an 11-1-2 SCAC record and a second-place regular season and tournament finish. A three-time all-SCAC selection and two-time all-tournament honoree, Grossenbacher is the second Colorado College player to earn SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year honors – following Matt Fechter who received the award in back-to-back seasons (2011 and 2012).

Grossenbacher received five votes from the coaches in the SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year balloting. Trinity University senior forward Derrick Horvath received the remaining three votes.

Tom Carwile, a senior defender and team captain from Tulsa, Okla., anchored a Trinity defense that has posted a league-best 15 shutouts as well as a 0.71 shutout percentage (third in the nation) and 0.38 goals against average (fourth in the nation). He was named Defensive MVP of last weekend’s SCAC Men’s Soccer Tournament, leading Trinity to its fourth straight championship. It marked the second straight year he has been the league’s postseason Defensive MVP. Carwile was also was an important offensive weapon for the Tigers in 2015, posting a team-high nine goals (tied for the SCAC lead) as well as a league-leading seven game-winning goals. An All-American and a three-time All-SCAC First Team selection, Carwile is the first Trinity player to earn Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors since Alan Llobet earned a share of the award in 2009.

Carwile was the coaches’ consensus choice for Offensive Player-of-the-Year as he received seven votes in the balloting. Junior defender Jack McCormick of Colorado College received the remaining first-place vote.

Christian Sakshaug, a first-year midfielder from San Antonio, Texas, has started every game at center midfield and is the Tigers’ points leader (21), with the most assists (7) and the second-most goals (7) of anyone on the squad. Among first-year players, Sakshaug leads the SCAC in assists and is second in both goals scored and points. He had a goal and an assist in Trinity’s 5-0 victory over Texas Lutheran in the SCAC semifinals and was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts. Sakshaug third Trinity student-athlete to earn at least a share of SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors in the last four years, including his current teammates Francisco Vasquez (2013) and Carwile (2012).

Like Carwile, Sakshaug was the coaches’ consensus choice for Newcomer-of-the-Year as he received seven votes in the balloting. First-year midfielder Andrew Ciancone of the University of Dallas received the remaining vote.

Paul McGinlay guided the second-ranked Trinity men to another SCAC title, the program’s 18th overall and 17th in the last 20 years. In his 25th season as the head coach of the Tigers, McGinlay has amassed an overall record of 415-69-29 (.840), including a mark of 19-2 this season, heading into this weekend’s NCAA Tournament. He is the winningest active soccer coach, by percentage, in all NCAA Divisions and fifth all-time. McGinlay, a 13-time SCAC Coach of the Year honoree, has been elected the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Coach of the Year on nine occasions, including the 2014 season.

McGinlay received four votes from his peers in the COTY voting. Scott Palguta of Colorado College and David Hoffmann of Dallas split the remaining four votes.
