SEGUIN, Texas -- Jimmy Smith, the men's basketball coach who led Texas Lutheran University to back-to-back conference titles and consecutive NCAA Division III national tournament appearances, announced his resignation Friday as the Bulldogs' head coach.
Smith has accepted an assistant coach position with Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas and will join the Bearkat staff in July. Sam Houston State is a member of the NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference.
"I am very proud of what we have been able to accomplish in our two years at Texas Lutheran," said Smith. "The majority of the praise for our success needs to go to the kids we have had in the program. These guys bought into our program and into what we were doing. Both seasons were different - different ways to win championships. We did it because we had great people, great support and a great coaching staff.
"I am definitely thankful for the opportunity given to me at Texas Lutheran. I am leaving the program in a good place and am really excited to see what this program will do in the coming years. I think it has just scratched the surface of where it can be."
In his two short years at TLU, Smith took a Bulldog men's basketball program that finished last in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in the year prior to his arrival and led the team to consecutive SCAC regular-season titles and consecutive conference tournament championships.
The Bulldogs were the top seed in both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 SCAC Tournaments and won the conference titles (thereby capturing the conference's automatic berths to the NCAA Division III Championship tournaments) with a combined four victories on the road. In each conference championship tournament, TLU defeated the host school in the tournament semifinal and the No. 2 seed in the final.
The 2014-15 and 2015-16 SCAC Championships were the first outright men's basketball conference championships at TLU since 1965. The two appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship are the first two NCAA men's basketball post-season appearances in school history.
Smith posted an overall coaching mark of 39-17 (.696) at TLU. In conference play with Smith, the Bulldogs were 22-6 (.786). TLU went 4-2 with Smith in post-season play (counting SCAC and NCAA tournament games).
The Bulldogs of 2015-16 posted the best single-season winning percentage (.750) in school history and the most single-season wins in TLU's NCAA Division III era. TLU came within one win of the most single-season victories in school men's basketball history.
Smith was named the NABC Division III South Region Co-Coach of the Year for 2015-16.
With Smith as head coach, TLU also hosted the university's first-ever NCAA Division III Championship game (first round in 2016).
Smith was named the SCAC Coach of the Year in each of his two seasons with the Bulldogs. He twice coached the SCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player (Jordan Kouremetis in 2015 and Sterling Holmes in 2016).
Holmes was named an All-American and the SCAC Player of the Year for 2015-16 after being named the SCAC Co-Newcomer of the Year for the 2014-15 season.
In addition to the honors collected by Holmes and Kouremetis, Smith coached Donte McGee to the 2014-15 SCAC Defensive Player of the Year award and Paris Marquez to the 2015-16 SCAC Newcomer of the Year honor.
In two years, Smith coached five players who claimed either SCAC First Team or Second Team awards. Twelve Bulldogs were named to the SCAC Academic Honor Roll.
"Coach Smith did a fantastic job in his short time here, and we are grateful to him for leading our men's basketball program to new levels of success," said Bill Miller, TLU's Director of Athletics. "We are sorry to lose him, but we know this is a good professional opportunity for him. We wish him all the best at Sam Houston State."
The process for selecting the next TLU head men's basketball coach begins immediately, TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey said Friday.
"We are grateful to Coach Smith for elevating TLU's basketball program to the top level in NCAA Division III, and we are committed to replacing him with a head coach who will continue and advance the program to even greater success."
Smith is returning to Sam Houston State after beginning his coaching career with the Bearkats in 2004. He joined the Bearkats as an assistant coach for the 2004-05 season and spent two full seasons with the men's basketball program, helping the Bearkats to a 40-21 record during that span. Current Sam Houston State Head Coach Jason Hooten was an assistant coach with Smith during that time.
