Fifteen Student-Athletes, Five Programs Earn NABC Academic Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) released the 2015-16 NABC Honors Court Tuesday, and 15 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball student-athletes were recognized. Five SCAC programs were also recognized with the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. 

Only one other conference in the nation (NCAA Division I, II and III or NAIA I and II) had more men's programs receive this honor.

The Honors Court recognizes the men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season. The NABC Honors Court recognizes the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom.  

The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2015-16 season.

Austin College led all SCAC teams with seven honorees, while Colorado College totaled four. Southwestern University added three student-athletes to the list and Texas Lutheran University rounded out the group with one. All four of those programs earned the team academic award, while Trinity University wasAustin Collegeed. 

From Austin College, seven juniors were recognized, including Brian Baehl, Josh Dickerman, Austin Freet, Eghosa Igbinosa, Cody Meyers, AndColorado Collegeeremy Swisher.

Colorado College seniors Justin Berardino, Tyler Jonas, James Lonergan and Luke Winfield earned the honor for the Tigers, while juniors Ben Stiver, Joshua Dale and Nnamdi Akabogu were recognized for Southwestern. Texas Lutheran junior Jordan Kouremetis was the Bulldogs' only honoree.

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows: 

1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player. 

2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2015-16 academic year. 

3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution. 

4. Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
