NORMAN, Okla. – Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s golfers earned PING All-West Region honors this week. Full Release
Travis Hindle of Trinity University, Cody Hebert of Southwestern University, Phillip Stewart of Schreiner University and Kraig Zimmerhanzel of Texas Lutheran University were among the 15 honorees from the west region.
ZImmerhanzel, a junior from Smithville, Texas, is the only back-to-back winner in the group, and earned the honor after posting a 73.95 scoring average this year. He totaled 70 birdies on the season, which ranks 16th in Division III. Zimmerhanzel also won two tournaments during the 2015-16 campaign, taking the title at the John Bohmann Memorial and the West Region Invitational. He also earned Honorable Mention All-SCAC honors this year.
Stewart, a senior from Lake Jackson, Texas, earned the all-region honor for the second time in his career. Stewart was an individual qualifier for the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship after holding a 73.25 scoring average. He is currently the fifth-ranked individual in the nation. Recently, Stewart was also named a finalist for the Jack Nicklaus Award, given to the top golfer in the country each year. Stewart earned All-SCAC honors at the SCAC Championship, finishing in third place with an even-par mark of 144.
Hindle, a junior from Ann Arbor, Michigan, finished in second place at the 2016 SCAC Championship, coming in just two shots out of the top spot. He earned All-SCAC honors with this finish. Hindle posted a scoring average of 74.83 this season, and is the 55th ranked golfer in the nation. He earned one Golfer of the Week honor this season after taking sixth at the West Cup in March.
Hebert, a senior from Katy, Texas, finished in the top ten in five of the eight tournaments he competed in this season including a tournament victory at the Abilene Intercollegiate. He averaged a score of 73.95 this season and shot par or lower in six rounds. He also earned All-SCAC honors this season, and took home one Golfer of the Week award.
