SAN ANTONIO - Former Trinity baseball standout Carter McEachern has signed a contract with the Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) Goldeyes.
The Goldeyes are members of the 12-team American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. The league is divided into three divisions, and Winnipeg competes in the North Division.
McEachern returns to his native Canada to play pro ball, as the third baseman hails from Thunder Bay, Ontario. He was a major factor during the season as the Tigers captured the NCAA Division III Championship. Trinity wrapped up the season with a 44-7 record, setting a school mark for victories.
The 2016 Trinity graduate was selected for the All-Tournament Team at the Division III World Series, held in Wisconsin. Trinity, led by 18th-year Head Coach Tim Scannell, went 5-0 on the national stage, and brought the championship trophy to the Trinity campus. The Tigers defeated Keystone (PA) College 2-0 in the best-of-three games finals series to win the crown.
Over the five games, McEachern batted .421 (8-19), with five runs, and six RBI, which included a home run. His best hitting game was the shutout opener against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he went 2-4 at the plate, while scoring two runs and driving in four. His round-tripper came against the Eagles. In the first game of the finals series, McEachern hit 2-4 with an RBI against Keystone, and crossed the plate twice.
McEachern was earlier named to the West Region All-Tournament Team, as the Regional was held at Spokane, Washington. The Tigers went 4-0 at the event, defeating Pacific Lutheran (WA) University in the final.
The NCAA ranked McEachern eighth nationally in sacrifice flies, as the strong hitter produced seven in his column. McEachern batted .347 (68-196) during the campaign, with 12 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 47 RBI, and 48 runs scored. The speedy McEachern also stole 7-7 bases. He was a .328 career hitter, with 97 RBI, 48 runs, and six homers to his credit.
McEachern became the second former Tiger player to recently sign a pro contract. Outfielder Jeremy Wolf was drafted by the New York Mets, and is now a member of the Kingsport (TN) Mets of the Appalachian League.
