INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Trinity's Paxton Deuel was selected to the singles and doubles competition at the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships. Full Release
Deuel previously participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2014. He is currently ranked #2 in the West Region singles ratings, and stands at 14-5 in dual matches. Last fall, Deuel captured the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region Singles Championship for the second time, and advanced to the National Small College Championships. Deuel also won the regional crown in 2013, and finished fifth at the national event. He defeated the top-seeded player in winning the consolation championship.
Deuel led the Tigers to a seventh consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. Trinity defeated Southwestern University 5-0 in the title matchup last month at Kerrville, Texas. Deuel was later elected the SCAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year for the second occasion, having also garnered the accolade in 2014.
Seventh-year Head Coach Russell McMindes will skipper the 12th-ranked Tigers to the regionals of the NCAA Championship tournament Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia, at Emory University. Trinity (17-9) has received a first-round bye, and will take on #36 Sewanee: The University of the South (TN) at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The individual championships will consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
The team championship will take place May 23-25 and the individual championships May 26-28, both at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan and will be hosted by Kalamazoo College.
