Trinity's Thiesse; MacAskill Earn SCAC Male Swimmer and Diver of the Year Honors

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Trinity University teammates Andrew Thiesse and Duncan MacAskill were named the league's male Swimmer and Diver-of-the-Year, respectively, based on exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Thiesse, a senior from Williamsburg, Va., earned 2016 SCAC Swimmer of the Meet recognition at February's conference meet on the strength of winning performances in the 500 freestyle, the 400 IM, and the 200 backstroke. Both of the times recorded in the 400 IM (4:04.26) and the 200 backstroke (1:49.22) met the consideration standards for qualifying for the 2016 NCAA Championships, and his time in the 200 back was a new Trinity and conference best-ever swim.

At the NCAA championships, in the prelims of the 400 IM, Thiesse swam a 4:03.93, moving up 10 places and landing a 15th place seed in the evening consolation finals. He held that place and won Honorable Mention all-American honors for the first time in his career. He also finished 19th in the 200 backstroke, just missing a night final swim there.

A three-time SCAC Swimmer-of-the-Week during the regular season, Thiesse was instrumental in helping Trinity's men to a fourth straight SCAC team title. His selection as SCAC Male Swimmer-of-the-Year is the eighth time a Trinity swimmer has earned the honor and he is the sixth different Tiger to receive the recognition.

MacAskill, a freshman from Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., was named the Male Diver-of-the-Meet after sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at the 2016 SCAC Swimming and Diving championships. He qualified and competed at the NCAA Regional diving meet two weeks later and just missed out on qualifying for the NCAA championships with a third-place finish on the 1-meter board. He also finished fourth on the 3-meter board.

During the 2016 season, MacAskill was voted Men’s Diver of the Week a SCAC single-season record six times.

In addition to being the fifth freshman to win SCAC Male Diver-of-the-Year honors, MacAskill is Trinity's third different student-athlete to earn the award and the first since Kevin Martin in 2011.

In exclusive voting of the league's head coaches that took place at the 2016 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships, Southwestern University's coaching staff was named the SCAC Men's Staff of the Year for the second consecutive year.
