MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – No. 1 Trinity University held on to their top spot in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 this week after sweeping the now 16th-ranked Centenary College Gents.
The D3baseball.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly. Full members of NCAA Division III are eligible.
It was all Trinity in Shreveport, La. as the two SCAC rivals faced each other for the first time this year. Trinity opened the set with an 11-4 win on Friday night. The Tigers won Saturday’s opening game of the doubleheader 13-3, which was halted after seven innings by a run rule. Trinity then took game two 11-4. Riding a seven-game win streak, Trinity stands at 23-4 overall, and 8-1 in conference play. The Gents dropped to 17-6 and 6-3 after the weekend losses.
Trinity's bats are led by senior outfielder Andrew Waters who posts a team-best .433 batting average, .836 slugging percentage along with five homers. Senior outfielder Jeremy Wolf has been a nightmare for opposing pitchers all season with eight home runs, 36 RBI and has drawn 18 walks for a .385 average and a .484 OBP. Junior right-hander Troy Nelson posts a team-best 2.17 ERA on 47 strikeouts and has held opposing bats to a .215 average.
Centenary's bats continue to be led by junior outfielder Michael Schimpf who posts a .467 average, .641 slugging percentage and a .573 OBP. He also leads the team in runs scored (33) and hits (43). Sophomore pitcher Kaleb Kirk posts a team-best 2.77 ERA on 40 strikeouts.
Trinity will head to Schreiner University this weekend for a three-game set while the Gents have East Tex. Baptist at home.
