LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The final Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's tennis squad made its 2019 debut last week as Austin College took the court for the first time this season.
Southwestern maintained its perfect record through week three, downing Concordia (Tex.), Schreiner and Sul Ross State over the weekend. The Pirates dropped just three points the whole weekend, kicking off with a 7-2 win over the Tornados on Friday. In singles play, (No. 2) Hunter Bajoit, (No. 3) Alexander Joseph, (No. 4) Dean Dulthummon and (No. 6) Carlos Rodero taking straight sets. Southwestern dominated doubles play as well, taking all three matches with little resistance. On Saturday, SU gave up its only point of the day to Schreiner in the No. 3 doubles match between Mountaineers Casey Voss and Austin Cervantes and Pirates Alonso Fernandez and Jeremy Wilson.
Despite its loss to Southwestern to start the day on Saturday, Schreiner bounced back to defeat Sul Ross State. In singles play, No. 1 Luis Cabreja defeated Manny Barrera and No. 3 Andrew Ablbright defeated Chris Llamas. The Mountaineers swept doubles as well, with No 1 pair Cabeja and Albright defeating Barrera and Llamas, Joshua Newman and Matthew Jimenez taking the No. 2 match against Kyle Ferguson and Javier Flores and Voss and Cervantes shutting out the No. 3 Josh Riley and Anthony Williams.
No. 17 Trinity defeated East Texas Baptist at home on Saturday, 9-0. No. 1 singles Wilson Hamilton, No 2 Cameron Krimbill and No. 4 Tilden Oliver dropped just a single game, each, to win in straight sets for the Tigers. Christian Settles (No. 5) and Artur Zigman (No. 6) downed opponents in straight sets. In doubles play, Wilson Lambeth/ Jordan Pitts (No. 1), Hamilton/Settles (No. 2) and Matt Tyer/Zigman topped opponents with ease.
Austin College went 1-2 over the weekend, defeating Centenary 9-0.
The SCAC men’s tennis schedule restarts on Friday as Trinity matches up with Laredo Community College and Incarnate Word and continues on Saturday when Austin College, Schreiner and Southwestern host a slew of matches.
