KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The United Soccer Coaches (USC) released the 2018 Scholar All-Region Teams Monday, and five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer players earned the honor.
The SCAC dominated the West Region team, taking up five of the available 11 spots, led by three selections from Colorado College and one apiece from Austin College and Texas Lutheran.
CC’s Keller Mochel, Keenan Amer and Robert Malone all represented the Tigers on the team. Mochel, an economics major with a 3.46 grade point average, also earned USC All-West Region third-team honors earlier this season. The junior goalkeeper helped anchor a CC Tiger defense that allowed just 18 goals on the season and posted a 0.90 goals against average.
Malone, a computer science major with a 3.39 grade point average also earned USC All-West Region third-team and All-SCAC second-team honors earlier this season. The senior forward led CC with seven goals and 16 points on the season.
Amer, an organismal biology and ecology major with a 3.84 grade point average also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-SCAC honorable mention accolades earlier this year. The senior defender helped solidify a Tigers’ defense which ranked first in the SCAC with 11 shutouts but also chipped in offensively with a team leading five assists and two goals on the year.
Representing Austin College was senior Joseph Khalaf. Khalaf, a math and economics major with a 3.81 grade points average was also named the inaugural winner of the SCAC Men’s Soccer Elite 19 award earlier this fall. The goalkeeper captured First Team All-SCAC honors and led the ‘Roos to an appearance in the SCAC Tournament.
Finally, Texas Lutheran’s Eduardo Lopez-Rivera rounds out the SCAC selections on the USC Scholar All-West Region team. Lopez-Rivera, a business major with a 3.39 grade point average also earned Second Team All-SCAC honors this season. The junior defender played in all 19 matches this year and helped the Bulldogs to a SCAC Tournament semifinal appearance and an over record of 11-8.
