LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Heading into the final weekend of regular season Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball, the four spots have been secured for the SCAC Tournament following last weekends results on the diamond as Texas Lutheran, Trinity, Southwestern and Centenary (16-20-1, 8-7) will all compete for the tournament crown for the sixth-straight season.
Texas Lutheran (27-8, 12-3) extended its winning streak to eight following a three-game sweep of Austin College (7-23, 3-12) last week. Freshman Joe Jimenez led the way at the plate for the Bulldogs batting .727 (8-for-11) with seven RBI, five runs scored, two extra base hits and a home run. TLU has now won 25 or more games in a remarkable seven of its last eight seasons.
Trinity (30-9, 14-4) secured its eighth 30-win season since 2010 following a perfect 4-0 week that included a three-game sweep of Schreiner (12-25, 5-10) and a non-conference victory against Mary Hardin-Baylor. On the mound, Carter Fronk earned a win in his only appearance last week, sparking the series sweep over the Mountaineers. Fronk came on in relief in the opening game of the series, allowing one run on five hits over 6.0 innings, and striking out 10 batters. Offensively Jake Martin went 8-for-18 (.444) at the dish overall but batted .500 (7-for-14) in conference play. Martin had four doubles, adding five RBI and one run scored.
Southwestern (22-14, 9-6) reached the 20-win plateau for just the third time since 2010 following a perfect 4-0 week, with a non-conference win over Hardin-Simmons and a three-game series sweep against Dallas (16-20, 3-12). The 22 wins is already a four-win improvement over J.C. Bunch's inaugural campaign as manager in 2018 and matches the most wins for the Pirates since 2009. Byron Dowdell II hit for power and average to lead Southwestern offensively, blasting two home runs with three doubles last week. He hit .588 with a 1.118 slugging percentage and 11 RBI with six runs scored. On the mound, Austin Smith tossed a no-hitter in the series' opener against Dallas. Smith finished the night with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.
SCAC baseball wraps up regular season action this week with three series scheduled as Texas Lutheran travels to face Schreiner, Austin College hosts Dallas and Centenary takes on Southwestern in Georgetown with tournament seeding implications on the line.
