LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Three of the seven Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s golf teams were in action last week, highlighted by Southwestern and Dallas competing at the highly competitive Rhodes College Fall Classic.
The Pirates and Crusaders along with 18 other non-conference schools battled it out on the par-72, 7,111-yard Tunica National Course in Tunica, Miss. Huntingdon captured the team title at the event after a 54-hole score of 842 (283-282-277).
Southwestern stormed up the leaderboard after being outside the top-10 following the opening round to finish fifth with a three-day team score of 868 (298-281-289). The Pirates second round score of 281 was the lowest on the day. Southwestern senior Sutherland Stith finished the tournament in a four-way tie for sixth with a five-under total of 211 including a second round 66 to lead the Pirates.
Dallas finished the tournament in 14th after carding a team total of 886 (304-289-293). Leading the way for the Crusaders was Emilio Montalvo who finished in a four-way tie for 26th after turning in a one-over par 217 which included an opening round four-under par 68.
Johnson & Wales made its fall debut last weekend at the Twin Cities Classic, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus in Edina, Minn. St. John’s Univ. (MN) won the team title with a total tally of 902 (294-295-313), while the Wildcats finished 17th after carding a three-day total of 1,113 (368-366-379). Junior Alexander Fernandez was the top finisher for JWU, posting a tournament total of 254 (88-78-88) to finish 81st.
SCAC men’s golf continues next week as Dallas and Schreiner will compete at the UMHB Intercollegiate and Johnson & Wales will tee it up at the Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invite.
