SCAC Baseball Recap - Week 9

Complete Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball season continues to wind down as week nine concluded on Sunday.

No. 4 Trinity (23-7, 9-3) was a perfect 4-0 last week, sweeping its three-game weekend series with Austin College (7-17, 3-9) while picking up a win over Hardin-Simmons in non-conference action on Tuesday. Against HSU, the Cowboys jumped on the Tigers early, scoring five runs in the first inning, but Trinity chipped away, collecting two runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings to take an 8-7 lead heading into the ninth. The Cowboys managed to score on an error in the frame to send the game to extras and appeared to have the game in hand after scoring four runs in the 10th. Trinity, however, answered back as senior outfielder Jake Martin drove in a run, junior Rafe Chaumette loaded the bases and classmate Mason Meredith ended the game with a walk off grand-slam, his second home run of the night.

On the week, Meredith slugged .929, driving in nine runs and hitting three home runs while senior infielder Dalys Binder hit for the cycle going 7-for-16 at the plate (.438). In a pair of appearances on the mound, senior right-hander Ian Hussain struck out 13 batters and allowed no earned runs through 9.2 innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Corey Carter was also impressive, picking up a win in the second game against Austin College while recording 11 strike outs. He allowed two earned runs in eight innings of work.

No. 5 Texas Lutheran (21-8, 6-3) dropped just one game last week in its three-game series with Southwestern and added a 6-2 win over Concordia (Tex.) in non-conference play on Tuesday. On offense, junior outfielder Tyler Cauley batted .444 (8-for-18) for the week, tallying a team-high nine RBI, while classmate Nick Gardoni collected five runs. Against Southwestern on Friday, senior RHP Nathan Malinovsky tossed a complete game, picking up 13 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run.

In its lone victory of the week, Southwestern (16-11, 5-4) defeated Texas Lutheran, 6-3, in Friday’s series opener. In that victory, the Pirates jumped out to an early lead, notching four runs in the second inning. Junior third baseman Daniel Montgomery Jr. led the way for Southwestern, going 2-for-4 at the plate (.500) and driving in a run. On the mound, sophomore right-hander Austin Smith picked up his fifth win of the season, striking out 11 while allowing three runs in a complete game. Earlier in the week, the Pirates were edged by Howard Payne, 9-8.

Centenary (16-17-1, 8-4) swept Schreiner (10-20, 3-6) in its three-game series over the weekend, but fell to Louisiana College, 10-3, at the beginning of the week. In the final game against Schreiner, the Gents battled back from a 6-0 deficit, collecting three runs in the sixth and adding six runs in the seventh to pull out the 9-7 win. Over the course of the week, sophomore infielder Preston Ludwick and freshman catcher Shane Salzman each picked up five RBI. Junior outfielder Cody Crowder scored a team-high five runs while posting a .529 on base percentage. Sophomore RHP Andy Purpura collected the opening 4-1 win over Schreiner, sitting three batters and allowing no earned runs through 6.2 innings of work. Classmate Connor Cudd picked up saves in all three games against the Mountaineers.

Dallas (15-14, 2-7) prevailed over Thomas More, 2-1, in its non-conference three-game weekend series. Sophomore middle infielder Joseph Vondrachek and senior outfielder Luke Boylston slugged .750 and .636, respectively, while senior middle infielder Josh Abalos went 5-for-10 at the plate (.500) with three runs scored and two RBI. On the rubber, junior left-hander Conrad Voss recorded eight strike outs and allowed one earned run through seven innings in the series opener.

The SCAC baseball schedule continues on Monday when Southwestern hosts Arlington Baptist in non-conference action. Conference play continues over the weekend as Southwestern plays host to Trinity, Texas Lutheran visits Centenary, and Schreiner welcomes Dallas.
