Four SCAC Men's Basketball Players Earn D3Hoops.com All-Region Honors

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball players were recognized by D3hoops.com Tuesday as the website released the 2017-18 All-South Region teams. Four players is the most the SCAC has had on the All-Region team since 2007-2008, when the league had five players honored.

The players represented four member institutions as Keenan Gumbs of Schreiner University, Travion Kirkendoll of Centenary College, Spencer Levi of the University of Dallas and Eric Houska of Colorado College were honored. Levi was also recognized as the South Region's Rookie of the Year. All four were members of the 2017-18 All-SCAC First Team, and two earned major awards in the league.

Gumbs, a senior guard from Cibolo, Texas, was the league's only first-team player. He was also named to the NABC All-South District team earlier this week, continuing his strong awards season. Gumbs earned the 2017-18 SCAC Player of the Year award last month, and highlighted the Mountaineers' men's basketball championship by earning tournament MVP honors.

In his senior season, Gumbs averaged 21.2 points per game (second in the SCAC), while grabbing just over seven rebounds and one steal per contest. He also totaled 47 assists on the season. He shot 49.9% from the field and 43.3% from distance, both marks that rank in the league's top-10.

Kirkendoll and Levi earned second team honors, while Houska was named to the third team.

Kirkendoll, a senior guard from Campti, La., led the conference with 22.2 points per game while shooting 51.5% from the field. He was second in the league with 60 steals on the season, and averaged 5.0 rebounds per game. He also dished out 89 assists. He helped the Gents back to the SCAC title game for the first time since 2015.

During the SCAC championship game, Kirkendoll became the conference's all-time leading scorer with 1,919 points, topping the previous record set by Russ Churchwell of Oglethorpe University that has held since 2005.

Levi, a freshman forward from St. Louis, Mo., earned SCAC Newcomer of the Year honors this season, averaging 19.0 points (third in the SCAC) and a conference-leading 11.3 rebounds per game. He finished the season shooting 70.2% from the field, which ranks fourth in all of NCAA Division III. He is also seventh in the nation averaging 2.73 blocked shots per game.

Houska, a senior guard from Wilton, Conn., was a key part of the Tigers' offense, playing 39.2 minutes per game and averaging 17 points and four assists per contest. He added his name to the record book this season, ending his career with 404 assists (sixth-most in league history).
