NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – No. 6/9 Trinity University Women's Soccer dropped its first contest of the 2022 campaign Saturday afternoon, 1-0, at the hands of this weekend's NCAA III Sectional host No. 3 Christopher Newport University.

The Tigers (21-1-2) and Captains (19-0-2) battled mightily in the midfield throughout the contest as both sides only mustered three on-target shots each in 90 minutes, combining for just five corners.

Trinity completes the season having logged the program's 26th Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, 27th appearance in the NCAA III Women's Soccer Championship tournament, the fourth 20-plus win campaign and fourth NCAA III round of 16 appearance in the last decade.

In 2022, No. 6/9 Women's Soccer posted its 13th season of one loss or fewer over the last 25 years.

The Rundown

Christopher Newport had the first three shots of the game, but none were on target and two of those were blocked by the Trinity defense. Molly Sheridan put the first shot on frame in the 20th minute, but Captains keeper Jaya Daniel notched her first save of the game. Lauryn Lewis picked up a save late in the first half to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

The teams traded shots early in the second half - including an on-target attempt from Michaela Bosco just over 10 minutes into the period - but the game remained deadlocked. Christopher Newport reponded to Bosco's shot with five shots over the next 10+ minutes, ending with the game's first goal in the 66th minute of play.

Two of Trinity's last three shots came almost immediately after the goal, but the Captains maintained the lead. Sheridan got another on-target shot in the 78th minute, resulting in another save for Daniel. The Tigers also won two corner kicks in the final 82nd and 83rd minutes, but were unable to break onto the scoreboard in the end.
