Jason Jones Jr., Austin College, Men's Basketball - Character & Community

JASON JONES JR. OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a junior forward on the men's basketball team from Houston, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 20.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Jason learned early that being adaptable and open to change is a good thing, and that’s a lesson he’s carried with him throughout his young life and into his time at Austin College. Born in Germany, he’s been able to live all around the world before finding himself running the hardwood and crashing the boards in Hughey Gymnasium.

A junior on the ‘Roo men’s basketball team, Jason comes from a military background, with his mother serving in the United States Air Force. Growing up in that type of environment has certainly made a big impact on Jones, helping to shape his work ethic as well as enabling him to become a student leader while also excelling both in the sport he loves as well as in the classroom. Jason has been one of the top performers for the ‘Roo men’s hoops team, but his success has also carried over into the classroom, including being named as a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection for his outstanding academic performance.

Adaptability and being willing to not just embrace, but lean into change is part of what’s helped Jason succeed. It’s taught him to be open to other people and cultures, as he’s spent time living not just in Germany and the United States, but also Japan, Turkey, and other places around the world. It’s a lifestyle he’s actively pursuing moving into the future, as well, as he plans on following in his mother’s footsteps and enlisting in the Air Force with an eye toward working with public relations and communications.

He’s gotten his feet wet in those areas while at Austin College, as well, working within the athletics department as an athletics communications student assistant, as well as studying communications. This past January, Jason also completed an internship with Alpha Media Radio, and during his time living on Rammstein Air Base while in Germany, he worked extensively as a Health Promotions Intern, helping to develop nutrition and wellness goals and plans. Jason is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and has been both an All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference performer on the court as well as being named to the SCAC Academic Honor Roll.
