Day One Comes to a Conclusion at 2023 SCAC Showdown

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The first day of the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Esports Showdown concluded on Friday as eight teams are competing for league supremacy at the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio. SCAC Esports Showdown Website | Photo Album

Finals in League of Legends, Valorant, Rocket League, Apex Legends, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be contested on Saturday – leading to the crowning of the SCAC overall team esports champion.

The Esports Showdown team title will be awarded based on the total number of points accumulated from tournament play. Points are awarded to teams based on team finish in each of the five gaming competitions. First place in any event is worth four points and second place teams will earn three points. Teams competing in the consolation final will receive two points for a third-place finish and one point for fourth place.  

The top two regular season teams proved their standing on Friday as top-seeded Hendrix will tangle with second-seeded Trinity in the League of Legends championship final. Hendrix advanced into the final after defeating No. 4 Concordia (Texas) (2-0) in the semifinals. Trinity arrived in the final after knocking No. 3 Austin College (2-0) in the other semifinal. Chalk also held as top-seeded Southwestern and second-seeded Colorado College will compete in the Valorant championship final. Southwestern defeated No. 5 Hendrix, 2-0, and Colorado College knocked off No. 3 Concordia (Texas), 2-0, in the semifinals to reach the championship final. Colorado College, which also secured the top-seed in Rocket League, will square-off against the winner third-seeded Concordia (Texas) and fifth-seeded Austin College in Saturday’s final. The Tigers once again earned a bye as the No. 1 seed and then defeated No. 4 Hendrix, 3-0, in the quarterfinals and Concordia, 3-0, in the semifinals. Austin College rebounded after a first-round loss to fourth-seeded Hendrix (3-1) in the double elimination bracket with an upset of second-seeded Schreiner (3-1) and a 3-2 victory over Hendrix in a rematch against the Warriors. Concordia defeated sixth-seeded McMurry (3-1) and Schreiner (3-1) before taking its first defeat with a 3-0 loss to CC (3-0) in the semifinals. Rocket League bracket

Trinity ran the table in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate pool play, sweeping the field with a perfect 6-0 mark. Colorado College went 5-1, Concordia (Texas) was 4-2 and Austin College postred a 3-3 mark. The four advance to play in tomorrow's double elimination tournament with No. 1 Trinity and No. 4 Austin College and No. 2 Colorado College and No. 3 Concordia opening Saturday's bracket play. Super Smash Bros. Apex Legends closed out Friday's opening day competition with seven teams competing. The top team in the regular season, Schreiner, carried its top of the league status through the first day and takes a commanding lead with 122 points heading into tomorrow's championship round. Colorado College is in second with 62 points and holds a narrow lead over McMurry in third with 60 points. Hendrix follows closely with 58 points, while Concordia (Texas) is fifth with 42 points and Austin College is sixth with 32 points. Southwestern has 19 points but did not complete Friday's session and was disqualified.

Championship competition, which will be held in the main arena of the Boeing Center at Tech Port, begins Saturday with the League of Legends title match at 9 am CT. The Rocket League final starts at 1:30 pm and Apex Legends and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will begin at 2:30 pm. The Valorant title match will wrap up the day's activites at 4:00 pm with the awards ceremony to follow, scheduled for 7:30 pm.
