Trinity Sweeps Texas Lutheran in SCAC Volleyball Semifinal Action

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Texas Lutheran opened up an early 5-2 lead in the first set before Trinity responded with a 9-4 run to take a narrow 11-9 lead. The Tigers tied the match at 18-18 off a kill from Annie Rose Leggett. Trinity then closed out the match on a 7-3 run to take set one 25-21. 
  • Much like the first set, the second set was a back and forth affair. The match was tied 12-12 midway through the set on a kill by Leggett. A few plays later the Bulldogs tied the set at 15-15 thanks to kill from Madison Weisinger. Trinity closed out the match with a Texas Lutheran service error and kills from Sarah Williammee and Emma Funk.
  • The Tigers jumped out to a commanding 10-2 lead early in the third set before the lead swelled to 20-9 after a Funk kill. Trinity won the match with a 25-11 third set victory. 
  • Trinity limited Texas Lutheran to just a .116 hitting percentage for the match while the Tigers hit .293 or better in each of the three sets.

NOTABLES

  • Trinity hit .293 or better in each set while limiting Texas Lutheran to hitting no better than .226 in any set. 
  • The Tigers extended their winning streak to 11 matches and went a perfect 3-0 against the Bulldogs with three sweeps.
  • This was just the second-ever meeting between Trinity and Texas Lutheran in the SCAC tournament. The Tigers earned a 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs in 2013.

Trinity (30-2 overall), which is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by the AVCA, advances to the 2021 SCAC Championship where they will take on the winner of this afternoon's second semifinal between Southwestern and Colorado College tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT. The winner of the championship match will earn the SCAC's automatic qualifier to the 2021 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship. Texas Lutheran will play the loser of the Southwestern vs. Colorado College match in the 3rd/4th place game tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
