Trinity's Coleman, Texas Lutheran's Patterson Highlight 2021-22 All-SCAC Women's Basketball Selections

Trinity's Coleman, Texas Lutheran's Patterson Highlight 2021-22 All-SCAC Women's Basketball Selections

SHERMAN, Texas – In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), senior center Hailey Coleman of Trinity University earned SCAC Women’s Basketball Player-of-the-Year honors, while head coach Troy Patterson of Texas Lutheran University was named the league’s Coach-of-the-Year. Complete Release

In that same balloting, Schreiner University first-year guard Demauria Miles was selected the conference First-Year Player-of-the-Year and University of Dallas graduate guard Amber Turner was named SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year.

The SCAC Co-Newcomer-of-the-Year in 2018-19, Coleman becomes the ninth player in league history to also win Player-of-the-Year honors. Coleman, a two-time SCAC Player-of-the-Week selection, enters the SCAC Tournament among the league leaders in several statistical categories despite finishing outside the top 20 in minutes played (24th – 25.0 MPG). She is currently first in the SCAC in field goal percentage (61.4 percent), sixth in scoring (12.5 points per game), third in field goals made (135), fifth in rebounding (8.1 per game), second in blocks (40) and tied for 11th in steals (36). Coleman reached the 15-point plateau nine different times this season and recorded five double-doubles heading into the SCAC Tournament. One of the best shooters in SCAC history, Coleman’s current field goal percentage of 61.4 is the sixth best mark in league history and if she maintains her spot at the top of the conference, she will become just the second player ever to lead the league in field goal percentage three different years. Her 21 points behind a perfect 10-for-10 shooting in a win over Schreiner back on February 8th marked just the second time in league history a player has posted a perfect shooting performance on 10 or more made field goals. A two-time first team all-SCAC performer, Coleman’s selection as POTY represents the seventh time in the last nine years and ninth time overall a Trinity student-athlete has won or shared the honor.

Coleman received five votes from the coaches in the Player-of-the-Year balloting, while Colorado College’s Anna Fanelli, Schreiner’s Gabby Ivarra, Southwestern’s Lauren Fulenwider and St. Thomas’ Micayla Hamilton each received one first-place nod.

Miles of Schreiner led the Mountaineers in scoring (11.1 points per game) and averaged over a full point per game more during league play (12.6 points per game), good for seventh best in the SCAC. She played in all 25 games this season, getting 15 starts, all coming in SCAC action, and enters this weekend’s tournament ranked in the top 10 in the league in several offensive categories including free throw percentage (80.9 – 1st), field goals made (95 – 8th) and three-point field goals made (33 – 9th). She paced Schreiner in each of those statistical categories. Miles scored in double-digits in 16 contests, which included a career-high 26 in a victory over Centenary on February 4th. Miles becomes the second Mountaineer in program history to earn SCAC Women’s Basketball First-Year Player-of-the-Year, joining Zahra Cross who earned the accolade in 2019-20.

Miles received five votes from the league’s head coaches in earning First-Year Player-of-the-Year honors. First-year guard Canai McPherson of the University of Dallas received three votes, while first-year guard Kailee Mulkey of Texas Lutheran picked up the remaining first-place vote.

Dallas’ Turner was a defensive stalwart, often asked to guard the opponent’s top playmaker each night with little rest, leading the Crusaders in minutes played and finishing second in the league in the category at 36.2 minutes per contest. Turner finished the season with 24 steals, averaging 1.1 steals per game, and added 2.8 defensive rebounds each contest.

Turner received three votes in the balloting for the league’s Defensive POTY award, edging out Trinity sophomore guard Maggie Robbins who garnered two votes. First-year guard Elisa Peralta of Schreiner, junior forward Reece Sandercock of Southwestern, junior forward Jade Evans of St. Thomas, and senior guard Jenesis Navarro of Texas Lutheran each received one vote.

In his fifth season at Texas Lutheran and first as head coach, Troy Patterson led the Bulldogs to a 16-8 overall mark during the regular season, a 13-3 conference record and the No. 2 seed in this weekend’s conference tournament. Picked to finish fifth in the SCAC preseason coaches’ poll, TLU secured its most wins in SCAC play (13) in program history and is currently riding a four-game win streak. The 13 league victories is tied for the fourth most in SCAC history by a coach in their first-year coach in the conference. Seven-time SCAC Coach-of-the-Year, Kris Huffman of DePauw owns the record for most SCAC wins in their first season, with 18. The Coach-of-the-Year honor is the first for Patterson and the third for Texas Lutheran, as he joins Mel Dixon who won the award following both the 2013-14 and 2018-19 seasons.
