Harrison John, Centenary College, Men's Golf - Character & Community

HARRISON JOHN OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a senior on the men's golf team from Lafayette, La., has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 14.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

John is a unique individual, but like many of his fellow student-athletes on the Centenary College campus, he is pressed for time. Finding just the right balance as a student-athlete can be difficult.

A senior leader on the Centenary men’s golf team, he has found a way to do just that and fine tune that needed balance.

“Being a college athlete and a student is difficult for several different reasons,” said John. “Your time management skills are put to the test week in and week out. What helps me stay on top of class work and practice is getting into a good routine of making it to class, making time each day to do homework or study for upcoming exams, and communicating with my professors when we are on the road traveling. The senior members of the golf team were important to my success when I was a freshman, as they held everyone on the team accountable in the class room and on the course.”

John is actively involved in several community service projects including The Big Event put on by Centenary and Common Ground Community.

“Professor Lisa Cronin, who is the CEO of Common Ground, encouraged students early on to volunteer and do what they can to give back to the community of Shreveport," continued John. "Many of my teammates and peers have done great work within the community through Centenary events and other community volunteer opportunities.”

A native of Lafayette, La., John has found a temporary home three hours north of his hometown and playing the game that he loves certainly helps. Head golf coach Emlyn Aubrey recommended John for this honor.

“As I was deciding on which college to attend, I took a tour of Centenary and learned more about the college," said John. "The more I looked into what Centenary had to offer, it checked all the boxes in what I was looking for to further my athletic career and academic achievement.”

“Golf has given me many great opportunities to meet new people and make lifelong friends. Golf has taught me to be strong mentally through the ups and downs of the game, similar to life’s highs and lows. You have to keep your head down and keep working hard to achieve your goals. A small student body is nice to have because you get to know almost all of your peers and how they navigate through sports and academics.”

“Being featured for the SCAC Character & Community award means a lot to me because I’ve always tried to better my own character to lead through example for others. Stepping up and giving back to our great community means a lot to me.”
