BLANCO, Texas -- No. 14 Trinity University fired a first-round 323 and holds a slight five-stroke lead over both Southwestern University and the University of St. Thomas following Monday’s first round of the 2022 SCAC Women’s Golf Championship at Vaaler Creek Golf Club. Tomorrow’s final round at the par-72 5,885-yard layout will begin at 8 a.m.
After the first 18 holes, Trinity is sitting at +35 and is five shots clear of both Southwestern and St. Thomas which are currently tied for second after firing a first-round score of 328 (+40). The Tigers took advantage on the par 3s, finishing an opening round best just +7 as a team on the four short holes. Trinity and Southwestern both finished with seven birdies each as a team on the day to lead the field and St. Thomas closed out the first round with six.
Four Tigers sit in the top eight after the opening round, led by Kiona Hsiu who fired a 75 (+3) to lead by one in the race for individual honors. Hsiu led the field in par 5 scoring (4.50) en route to her career low round at the SCAC Championships. Teammates Raquel Hill (82 – T6), Alejandra Sanchez De la Fuente Molino (83 – T8) and Erin Farrow (83 – T8) round out the Tigers in the top eight after day one.
Southwestern has two players in the top 5 with Linsey Garza leading the way with an 80 – good for fourth. Isabel Montelongo is currently in fifth after her first-round 81. Garza (2) and Montelongo (3) combined for five birdies on the afternoon.
St. Thomas was led by Trinity Le who led the field with 12 pars and shot an opening round score of 77, currently sitting in third place. Myra Truong posted a first-round score of 82 (T6) to round out the Celts in the top 10 after the opening 18.
Rounding out the first-round team standings, University of Dallas is in fourth place with 351, Schreiner University is fifth with a 374 and Centenary College sits in sixth with a 404.
Dallas’ Kimberly Burch recorded the lone eagle of the afternoon and led the field with four birdies to finish with an opening round 76, one-shot behind the leader Hsiu in second.
