FERNANDO DEVILA OF UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS, a sophomore infielder on the baseball team from Frisco, Texas has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 15.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

When Devila isn’t on the diamond or in the cage, he is an active member of the University of Dallas community. On campus, he serves on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Devila has long been a leader by example. Whether he’s helping teammates with proper nutrition, taking extra hacks in the cage, or serving on admissions panels to educate new and prospective students, he lives his life with the near singular goal of being a positive influence on everyone he encounters.

“I like to represent UD in a positive way and be impactful in any way I can,” said Devila. “I strive to do it for everyone that comes to this campus. I like to lead by example, whether it’s in the classroom or on the field, and I like to be a positive role model for my fellow UD classmates.”

His experiences as a youth have helped to shape this mindset. Devila had a rather non traditional high school experience, coming into a brand new school as a freshman where there were no upperclassmen.

“I didn’t realize until I got to high school how important it was to have someone to look up to. Since then, I have strived to be someone that people can look up to.”

Devila believes that his experience in leadership roles has not only increased his enjoyment playing baseball, but has prepared him for his life and career after college. The business major plans on getting his master’s degree in finance after completing his undergraduate work to work in investment banking.

“Every day that you can do something right, it has an exponential effect. These years of being in leadership roles and trying to be disciplined and consistent, it’s taught me to have good habits every day, and it’s going to help me in the future, whether I’m on or off the field.”
