HOUSTON, Texas -- A gusty morning at the Bay Oaks Country Club pushed No. 14 Trinity University Women's Golf to make early adjustments in its opening round of the 2022 NCAA III National Championship Tuesday, but the Tigers held on through the afternoon's results to land well-within range of Thursday's third-round cutoff line with a 319 (+31).
The 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Champions stumbled early, going eight-over across the day's four counted scores on the first two holes, a pair of par-fours. The Tigers settled in soon-after to post a pair of three-over performances on the day from 2022 SCAC Medalist Kiona Hsiu and fellow All-SCAC first-teamer Alejandra Sanchez De la Fuente Molino, tying the pair for 15th on the individual leaderboard.
Both players went two-over going out, one-under coming in to produce identical rounds of 75, though the journey to get there was in stark contrast. Hsiu parred 12 pins on the day to go along with a pair of birdies as Trinity's model of consistency, while Sanchez De la Fuente Molino battled through a seesaw on the back nine with three birds against four bogeys.
Sophomore Erin Flynn posted an 82 (+10) as the third card toward the team score though miscues on the first and 17th were all that kept her away from being in lockstep with Trinity's leading pair.
No. 14 Trinity Women's Golf returns to the Bay Oaks Country Club Wednesday for a 12:20pm CT tee-time. Following the event's second round, pairings will be shuffled based on scoring before one final attempt to clear the cutoff line that follows Thursday's round.
