Schreiner Records 83-72 SCAC Quarterfinal Win Over Dallas

IRVING, Texas -- Four players scored in double figures as the Gold Division's second-seeded Schreiner University recorded an 83-72 quarterfinal round win over the host and Blue Division's third-seeded University of Dallas Crusaders on Friday evening in the opening game of the 2025 SCAC Men's Basketball Tournament at the Maher Athletic Center the campus of the University of Dallas. Official Tournament Website | Photo Gallery | Postgame Interview | Men's Tournament Stats

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dallas and Schreiner took turns trading baskets back and forth over the game's first five and a half minutes as the Mountaineers held a slim 10-9 lead. 
  • Schreiner pushed its lead to 22-16 at the midway point of the first half after a Charley Reedo 3-pointer. 
  • A 3-pointer from the Crusdaers' Chandler Holmes cut the Mountaineer lead to 26-25 at the 7:18-mark. Dallas' Thomas Fleming then tied the game at 30-30 on a jump shot with just over three minutes before halftine. 
  • Schreiner pushed the lead to 45-33 on a Beau Cervantes 3-pointer with 42 seconds before the Mountainers settled on a 45-36 halftime lead.
  • Dallas cut the lead to 49-43 after a Johnny Olmstead layup at the 16:36-mark of the second half. Both teams had trouble finding their rhythm over the next three minutes as the scored remained 53-49. The Crusaders cut the lead to just 53-51 after a pair of Jack Boyle free throws with 13:51 to play.
  • The Mountaineers then extended their lead to 59-53 at the midway mark of the second half. A Reedo jumper at the 7:4-mark gave Schreiner a 65-55 lead. Dallas cut the lead to 69-61 with just over five minutes remaining thanks to an Olmstead layup. From there, Schreiner was able to keep Dallas at arms length before securing the victory.

NOTABLE
  • Schreiner earned a 78-75 win over Dallas back on January 18. With the win, the Mountaineers improved to 10-8 all-time in SCAC postseason play and 1-1 against Dallas in SCAC tournament play. 
  • The Mountaineers earned the program's seventh appearance in the SCAC semifinals, including four of the past six seasons dating back to 2020.
  • The game was an even matchup on the glass as both teams tallied identical totals in both offensive rebunds (13) and defensive rebounds (27). 
  • Schreiner shot at a 46.3 percent (31-of-67) clip compared to Dallas' 41.5 percent (27-of-65) shooting. 
  • The contest featured five ties and three lead changes. 
  • Dallas ends its season at 13-13.
