Schreiner Records 57-49 Win over Austin College in SCAC Tournament Quarterfinal

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Austin College tied the game midway through the first quarter on a three-pointer from Lexi Martin to make it 7-7.
  • Late in the first quarter, the Kangaroos took a 13-9 lead on an Avery Sweeney layup before the Mountaineers reclaimed the lead at 15-13 with a three-pointer from Nariyah Buggs. 
  • The game remained tightly contested as both teams traded baskets in the second quarter. Austin College maintained a 19-15 lead midway through the second quarter before Schreiner took a 25-24 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
  • Early in the third qurater, a pair of Buggs free throws pushed the Moutaineer lead to 31-24. With just over a minute to play in the period, Cuellar hit a pair of free throws to cut Schreiner's lead to 34-32. 
  • A layup from Buggs extended the Schreiner lead to eight (42-34) at the 6:59-mark of the fourth quarter. From there, the Mountaineers withstood the Kangaroos' comeback attempt and secured the victory.
  • In a sign of how evenly matched the two teams were, both teams shot exactly 34.0 percent (17-of-50) from the floor and grabbed exactly 37 rebounds a piece. 
  • Austin College held a 19-8 edge in points off the bench as well as a 17-7 margin in fast break points.

  • Friday's game marked the first SCAC tournament meeting between these two teams since Austin College tallied a 69-55 quarterfinal win over Schreiner in 2022.

  • Schreiner improved to 3-2 all-time against Austin College in SCAC postseason play. 
  • With Friday's win, Schreiner advances to the semifinal round for the second straight year and the sixth time in program history. Its the first time the Mountaineers have advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament in back to back years since 2016. Top-seeded Trinity awaits Schreiner in the semifinals, setting up the third SCAC tournament meeting between the two. Trinity holds a 2-0 record in such matchups, with the last one coming in the 2017 semifinals. 
  • Austin College ends its season with a 9-17 record.
