Alisha Green, Centenary College, Women's Basketball - Character & Community

ALISHA GREEN OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a first-year guard on the women's basketball from Lafayette, La., has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Female Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 24.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Alisha Green can be described as a “servant leader” on and off campus and has already made a major impact on many lives as a freshman at Centenary College.

The rookie on the women’s basketball team is constantly busy and doing good all along the way.

“Alisha has been a great influence in the Centenary College Women's Basketball program and community,” said Centenary head women’s basketball coach Paul Reed.

“She has maintained a 4.0 GPA during the past fall semester making the Dean's List, she is a member of the choir and has performed the National Anthem before several of our games. Alisha also is an active member with the Army reserve performing training on weekends. The Centenary College program is blessed to have Alisha in our family.”

“I am currently taking the Community Credo class, and I am volunteering my time at Creswell Elementary School just up the road from Centenary,” said Green.

“Outside of work study, I assisted our Assistant AD Patrick Meehan with soccer and volleyball games last Fall. I have always enjoyed helping those around me as I would say that I love the feeling of being needed. Serving does not feel like a “chore” to me but rather an opportunity to make an impact in the lives of others and the environment around me.”

“The idea of attending a large university was intimidating to me. However, during my tour of Centenary, I immediately felt a strong sense of community. Knowing that I could build personal relationships with my professors eased my initial fears.

“At Centenary, I feel I can truly make an impact, whereas at a larger school, I might just be another face in the crowd. I believe it takes a special kind of person to be part of the Centenary community.”

“Basketball is not a sport where individual talent alone leads to success. You can score plenty of points or grab numerous rebounds, but it takes a team to set you up for that shot or box out for the rebound. This sport has taught me how to work with others who think differently than I do and adapt to changing environments and circumstances. Being a student-athlete has reinforced my discipline. Waking up for 6 a.m. practices is tough, especially while balancing classes, practices, games, travel, and study hours. However, this experience has shaped me into a more well-rounded and disciplined individual - qualities that will benefit me far beyond the court and the classroom.”

“I am incredibly honored and grateful to be recognized with the SCAC Character and Community Award. I’ve worked hard both on the court and in the classroom, and at times, it felt like my efforts went unnoticed. But receiving this award has shown me that even when it doesn’t seem like it, others are paying attention. I strive to be the best version of myself—not only as a role model for those younger than me but also as an example to my peers. God wakes me up each morning, and that is such a blessing, so I make it a point to serve those around me with a smile on my face and joy in my spirit.”
